Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Achieving global goals in gender equality and women’s empowerment (GEWE) requires an additional U$360 billion per year, which can unlock the potential U$12-28 trillion in GDP growth and 240 million jobs globally (U$2.5-4 trillion in China). If this funding gap is not addressed, we risk perpetuating existing inequalities and not achieving global goals in gender equality (e.g., SDG 5). UN Women aims to address this by catalyzing sustainable financing for gender equality and women’s empowerment while leveraging innovative mechanisms and encouraging transparent financing flows.
UN Women China aims to ensure that China’s international development cooperation, investments and business engagements contribute to SDG attainment in partner countries; women are economically empowered with the right financial literacy and resources to fully contribute to China’s high-quality economic development; and the financial ecosystem in China evolves to help close the gender equality gap both within China and internationally.
UN Women China seeks to build on global momentum and efforts to translate financial tools and resources for advancing sustainable financing for GEWE in close collaboration with multilateral development agencies, government bodies, financial institutions, research institutions, and private sector entities in China. This will entail adapting UN Women’s global tools and resources, developing partnerships with relevant stakeholders, enhancing advocacy, knowledge and mechanisms for sustainable financing (including through laws, policies, standards), and strengthening institutional capacity, data collection and analysis, and accountability (including through setting up robust monitoring, evaluation, and reporting on gender financing practices and results).
Meanwhile, to support China’s international development cooperation engagements for greater SDG impact and to strengthen the application of international norms, standards, and best practices, UN Women and sister UN agencies are jointly implementing a multi-year Joint Programme, including research, knowledge sharing and capacity-building workshops, multi-stakeholder dialogues, and other activities. The project aims to foster two-way exchanges and reinforce global efforts to achieve the SDGs.
Under the supervision of the Financing for Gender Equality Analyst, with matrix reporting line to Programme Analyst, South-South Cooperation for Gender Equality, the Programme Assistant is responsible for providing administrative, financial and coordination support to the Bridging the Financing Gap programme and sustainable finance for GEWE portfolio in China.
