Mission and objectives
Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence.
Context
The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call on the need for the environment to be taken into consideration in public health. It strengthened the urgent need for countries to adopt and implement the One-Health approach in addressing public health issues. The One Health approach simultaneously considers human health, animal health, and ecosystems / environmental health in preventing disease, developing preparedness, and responding to outbreaks and pandemics. The One-Health Quadripartite is a collaborative partnership to advance the implementation of One Health approach by countries. It is a partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The One-Health Quadripartite has developed a Joint Plan of Action (JPA) comprising six (6) action tracks one of them being the integration of the environment in One Health. This assignment intends to shed light on the status of the implementation of One Health in Africa and to specifically study the level of integration of the environment in the national One-Health initiatives. It seeks to identify opportunities, gaps challenges and entry points for mainstreaming environmental dimensions in these initiatives.
