Duties and Responsibilities
Trade, Investment and Innovation Division is looking for an intern who will support the work of the Innovation, Enterprise and Investment Section for three (3) to six (6) months. The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is supporting Cambodia’s Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) in developing a National AI Strategy. This process involves establishing a Community of Practice on AI (COPAI) to foster knowledge exchange, engage diverse stakeholders, and co-create a strategy blueprint aligned with Cambodia’s national policy frameworks. Activities include online workshops focused on ecosystem assessment, governance, ethics, human capital development, and implementation frameworks. As the strategy evolves through ongoing consultations with national and regional experts and the integration of local cultural and language considerations, the intern will support research, coordination, and administrative tasks central to this collaborative effort. The candidate is expected to undertake the following activities: A. Research and Data Collection: • Collect and analyze data on AI-related policies, initiatives, best practices, and cultural considerations. • Support ongoing assessments of the AI ecosystem in Cambodia. • Read, summarize and translate Khmer-language content, as needed. • Prepare documents, presentations, and basic reports. B. Coordination Support: • Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and consultations. • Coordinate communication with government agencies, private sector entities, and other stakeholders. C. Knowledge Management: • Update and maintain the project’s knowledge base. • Contribute to knowledge-sharing activities by helping compile meeting notes, summarizing consultations, and integrating expert input. • Maintain organized project files, ensure timely updates to knowledge bases, and track insights from discussions. Special Qualifications Required: • Good communication skills in English and Khmer. • Strong research and analytical skills. • Interest in AI, technology policy, cultural considerations, and innovation ecosystems. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. The minimum duration of an internship is minimum three months and can be extended up to a total of six months. The expected working hours for interns are from 0900-1630 hours with 45-minute lunch break and interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Innovation, Enterprise and Investment Section.
Qualifications/special skills
a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in computer science, web development, economic, finance, innovation, international relations related to science and technology, or any other related area; or b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Experience working with external stakeholders (government or private sector).
Languages
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
