Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Resident Coordinator System encompasses all organizations of the UN system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their format presence in the country. The UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) is the designatred representative of the UN Secretary-General and leading the UN Country Team (UNCT) and assumes the overall responsibility for – and coordination of – the development activities of the UN system. The UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in the DEMOCRACTIC REPLBLIC OF CONGO (DRC) brings together all the UN entities working on sustainable development in the country and leads the United nations Country Team (UNCT). Its main goal is to ensure joint planning and working together and ensure the delivery of tangible results in suppot of the development agenda of the Government of DRC, through the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, which guides the UN counry team’s development program cycle, in your agreement with the Government. The main functions of the resident coordinator office include but not limited to strategic analysis and planning; oversight of the UN country programming cycle; representation and support of UN Secretariat and UN Agencies including those without formal presence in DRC; support the national coordinator systems and processes; development and management of shared operational support services; crisis management prepardness and response; external communication and advocacy; human rights and political Development; joint resource mobilization and fund management; and general UNCT oversight and coordination. Under the direct supervision of the RCO Economist, the intern will contribute specifically to the monitoring of socio-economic indicators, including supporting the creation and the update of socio-economic databases. The intern will be responsible for finding a suitable location, IT stationery equipment and internet facilities to connect frequently with the RCO. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Responsibilites: – Support RCO Economist in monitoring the main socio-economic, SDG trends, data and indicators in DRC and in the region. – Assist in creating maintaining and updating a database of socioeconomic indicators, SDGs related indicators for DRC and other databases. Specifically, the intern will help o automate the production of relevant data, through comparison of different sources and the coding of automatic data downloads from a variety of sources. – Support the development/review of econometric models (e.g. forecasting, simulations) and macroeconomics analysis a (e.g. scenario analsis) to assess the impact of various development policies/interventions on the specific outcomes – Conduct basic statistical analsis – such as time series analysis – using relevant software (e.g. Matlab, GAMS, EViews, R, Excel) – Carrying out background research, including data collection and draft inputs to support the development of working papers and studies, Supoort data collection and analysis on the impact of the nexus approach. – The incumbent will also perform all other duties as required, including assisting with outreach activities, and reporting.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Preferred studies: PhD, bachelor’s or master’s degree in the area of Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, Applied Economics or another discipline with a substantively numerate component. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English and French languages are required for this internship. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
