JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Electrical and Machine Shop under the Electrical Unit (EU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. The incumbent reports to the General Foreperson of the Electrical Unit in DOS/DOA/FCAS/PES.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Foreperson of the Electrical and Machine Shop under the Electrical Unit (EU), the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: • Assist the Foreperson in the smooth functioning of the Electrical and Machine Shop; maintain existing electro-mechanical systems by supervising and coordinating scheduled routine and preventive maintenance operations performed by staff electricians and outside contractors; oversee emergency repairs and conduct scheduled inspections to detect electrical malfunctions; • Report electrical faults and submit regular maintenance reports to the Foreperson; • Ensure that the electrical installations/works meet safety standards in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and New York City (NYC) building codes, norms and regulations; thereby ensuring at all times the safety of occupants of the UN facilities; • Diagnose problems and provide solutions when electrical systems show signs of defects or malfunction; troubleshoot causes of breakdowns or malfunctions and rectify problems; • Perform surveys; prepare technical reports, read/interpret technical drawings and schematics, wiring diagrams, and the designs of electrical installations; • Maintain inventory records of all equipment, tools, spare parts, materials, and maintenance activities; check levels of stocks regularly and make recommendations to the Foreperson for replenishment ordering; • Prepare specifications for electro-mechanical equipment, fittings, fixtures, cables, panels, tools, and spares for the purpose of raising requisitions; • Act as Foreperson during the absence of the incumbent; assist the Foreperson in evaluating the performance of staff and outside contractors. • Perform other duties as required.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of experience as a skilled craftsman in the electro-mechanical trade in a reputable company or organization is required. Experience in installing, servicing, maintaining and repairing electro- mechanical equipment and installations is required. Experience trouble-shooting, maintaining and/or installing control wiring is required. Experience working on vehicle barrier systems and gates installations is desirable. Experience working with access control and Class 2 wiring is desirable. Experience supervising staff is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
