JOB DESCRIPTION

Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action (WPSHA) programme of the Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS) work closely with United Nations, government, and civil society partners to increase the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1325 and the inclusion of gender in Humanitarian Action. UN Women has been working with governments, UN partners, and civil society to support women’s participation and influence at all levels of decision-making to prevent and resolve conflicts in the Arab region and to ensure regional coordination on gender inclusion in humanitarian action.

To support its role, the WPSHA team at UN Women ROAS is seeking a gender researcher with strong expertise on gender research, with strong technical skills in quantitative and qualitative data gender analysis, monitoring and evaluation and strategic writing. The person will be on retainer, available to support the WPSHA team at UN Women ROAS as needed in analyzing data and drafting policy and research documents.

Main Objectives and Purpose of the Consultancy :

Under the supervision of the Regional Advisor on Women, Peace, Security, and Humanitarian Action, the objective is to hire a gender researcher (retainer) who will support UN Women in data analysis and research.

Description of Responsibilities/ Scope of Work

Research:

  • Draft high-quality knowledge products in English on various thematic topics (i.e. humanitarian action, women, peace and security, etc);
  • Develop inception reports, detailing methodologies and data collection tools for different research, policy briefs, and policy papers;
  • Address feedback on the deliverables and ensure that all knowledge products are proofread and approved by the direct supervisor;
  • Present the findings and recommendations of knowledge products in meetings and launching events;
  • Review from a gender lens inter-agency research frameworks, methodologies,s and assessment approaches;
  • Collect primary data through conducting focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews with key informants including rights holders, civil society actors, and governmental actors as needed;
  • Collect secondary data through conducting desk reviews to compile data available from different sources as needed;
  • Carry out quantitative data analysis exercises (questionnaires, surveys) with a focus on gender as a variable to assess gender priorities and trends and inform research;
  • Perform content analysis of qualitative data collected by UN Women, partners, or other agencies witha  focus on gender as a variable;
  • Edit and review UN Women-produced research.

Monitoring and Evaluation:

  • Supports on the design and implementation of monitoring and evaluation frameworks for UN Women projects.

Other:

  • Perform other duties as requested by direct supervisor.

Functional Competencies:

  • Substantial knowledge and understanding of women, peace, and security, and humanitarian action ;

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Human Rights, political sciences, international Affairs/Development, Sociology, Public Administration, Economics, Gender and Women’s Studies, and/or with strong knowledge of gender issues, or related discipline;
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: 

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in researching, data analysis, and editing complex reports with a focus on peacebuilding and humanitarian action and/or any other related experience is required;
  • Computer skills, internet communication, and command of MS Office are required.

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in written and oral English is required;
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
