JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

The ISS Systems Apprentice is a 1-year rotational apprenticeship program that provides an opportunity for hands-on experience and training in various areas of Information Systems and Services (ISS), including but not limited to business analysis, systems analysis, cybersecurity, and helpdesk operations. The ISS Apprentice will work under the supervision of experienced ISS professionals to support various ISS projects, learning how to assess systems requirements, design solutions, and ensure systems are functioning optimally. This apprenticeship is designed to serve as an opportunity for veterans through the Microsoft Systems Service Academy (MSSA) or other similar programs to gain experience in the civilian and technology field with broad exposure to a global nonprofit development organization.

Anticipated Duration: 1 year – Spring 2025 – Spring 2026

Hours: Full time, 40 hours/week

Pay Rate: $25.93–$30.00

Location: Remote. Preference for applicants based in Eastern or Central time zones.

Duties and Responsibilities

Complexity & Problem Solving:

  • Researches, plans, installs, configures, troubleshoots, maintains, and upgrades hardware and software interfaces with the operating system.
  • Analyzes and evaluates existing business procedures to define data processing needs and propose solutions.
  • Identifies inefficiencies in IT processes, recommends streamlined workflows, and implements tools or systems to enhance productivity.
  • Monitors and analyzes security incidents and events in real-time using various tools and systems to ensure system integrity.

Discretion & Impact:

  • Exercises judgment within established procedures to determine effective methods and techniques for addressing technical challenges.
  • Makes decisions that may affect the management and operations of an area within a department
  • Assists team members in implementing IT strategies, advising on hardware and software needs to align with organizational goals.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality regarding sensitive information processed or stored within the organization’s systems.

Collaboration & Interaction:

  • Collaborates with stakeholders across multiple sites to gather business requirements and document detailed functional specifications.
  • Engages with team members to evaluate and select suitable hardware and software solutions, fostering effective decision-making.
  • Provides SharePoint site administration support, customizing sites to meet organizational needs and facilitating user accountability.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships across departments to ensure IT systems support organizational objectives.

Management & Supervision:

  • Manages and prioritizes tasks or projects to ensure quality and efficiency in IT service delivery.
  • Contributes to process improvement initiatives, ensuring IT systems meet evolving organizational needs.
  • Supports cross-functional collaboration to achieve team goals
  • Embraces other duties as assigned, contributing to the team’s multifaceted and evolving responsibilities.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Demonstrates working knowledge of computer hardware, software, and programming systems, including SharePoint and Windows/Azure server administration.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with the ability to evaluate data and recommend solutions.
  • Proficient in creating management dashboards and reporting on KPIs and metrics to drive decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or its International Equivalent in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Management Information Systems or related field and/or MSSA related certifications.
  • Must be a Veteran that completed the Microsoft Software and Systems Academy.
  • 3-5 years of experience with server administration, networking, and IT system support.
  • Experience with Windows/Azure server administration, Active Directory, DHCP, WINS, DNS, and the OSI network model.
  • Read, write, and speak fluent English; fluent in host country language as appropriate.

Certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator or equivalent certifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in a non-governmental organization (NGO) or non-profit international development organization.
  • Familiarity with backup/restore systems, email platforms, and performance monitoring applications.

Travel

  • Less than 10%

Typical Physical Demands

  • Typical office environment. Constantly uses a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.

Technology

  • Computer/Laptop, Microsoft applications (i.e., Office 365, SharePoint, Skype/Zoom/Teams), cell phone/mobile technology, and standard office equipment.
