The ultimate result of the service is an effective communication and knowledge management framework that enhances the ReLISA project’s visibility, stakeholder engagement, and impact, driving increased investment in ecosystem restoration in South Africa. Deliverables such as a communication strategy, harmonized visual identity, functional website, promotional materials, and knowledge management outputs will support the project’s goals and align with UNEP’s mandate to promote sustainable development and environmental advocacy.

Duties and Responsibilities
Organization setting: UN Environment is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UN Environment Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The consultant will work for the Economics of Nature (TEN) Unit in the Ecosystems Division in UNEP to perform tasks on an IKI-funded project on ecosystem restoration in South Africa entitled Restoring Landscapes in South Africa (ReLISA) which aims to inter alia apply natural capital accounting to measure, value and make the economic case for restoration activities and thereby scale up investment in ecosystem restoration of savannah, subtropical thicket and grasslands biomes. Details of the initial IKI call for proposals can be found at https://www.international-climate-initiative.com/en/find-funding/country-call/translate-to-english-laender-call-suedafrika/ The UNEP-led ReLISA consortium comprises UNDP, UNESCO, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with two further partners to be contracted to coordinate private sector engagement. Duties and responsibilities The consultant will be responsible for: Communications-needs assessment and strategy 1. Develop a gender-responsive communications needs assessment and strategy to identify audiences, outlets, modes and to plan the suite of communications products 2. Develop stakeholder matrix and key messages for various audiences in a collaborative manner 3. Develop initial ReLISA policy brief, outlining project objectives, partners, approach etc. Website design and maintenance 4. Develop content for mock up version of the ReLISA website 5. Design and launch ReLISA website Graphic design 6. Designing communications materials such as brochures, presentations, factsheets, data visualization, infographics, and social media cards to support ReLISA communications and advocacy 7. Transforming text-based communications materials into visual graphic design materials such as infographics and others 8. Providing recommendations on relevant visual design style and materials suitable for different target audiences 9. Liaise with UNEP TEEB Communications Specialist and UNEP Communications Division regarding any visual design work to ensure compliance with UNEP communications policies and branding guidelines Knowledge management 10. Develop a draft knowledge management strategy for ReLISA, including linking project outputs to the UN Decade Digital hub, the ‘PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet’ initiative, the Society for Ecological Restoration and other Videos 11. Develop storyboard for a short slide-based introductory video for ReLISA 12. Develop workplan and draft storyboards for a video series of on ecosystem restoration in South Africa including ‘women in restoration’ Events 13. Promotional material and social media pack for ReLISA launch event 14. UNEP News article on launch of ReLISA project Coordination 15. Consultation with communications focal points in Consortium partners to design project-wide comms approach 16. Prepare harmonised project visual identity (logo banners, slide decks, event flyers etc.) for use by all Consortium partners 17. Coordinate reporting on communications outputs and impacts of all ReLISA partners and contribute to reporting of UNEP internally and to the donor. The Communication Specialist shall work under the guidance and overall supervision of the Head, Economics of Nature Unit (TEN).
Qualifications/special skills
A first level degree in communication, journalism, design, environmental studies, or related areas is required. An advanced degree in communication, journalism, design or related areas would be an added advantage. A minimum of two (2) years of responsible experience in communication of environmental and sustainable development issues to decision-makers in the government, private sector and the broader public at national and international levels is required. Experience working with social media and digital tools is desirable. Experience in graphic design and/or web design is desirable. Knowledge of Illustration and/or GIS skills, including knowledge of mapping software to analyze spatial data and design digital maps is desirable. Previous work with UN System or International Organization is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English is required.
