JOB DESCRIPTION

Mission and objectives

United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a key UN member since 1945 and active in Iraq since 1976, is dedicated to aiding the country’s transition to stability and reform. Aligned with the government’s vision, UNDP strives for a resilient Iraq by addressing social, economic, environmental, and political challenges. One of its primary goals is to fortify institutions, ensuring they provide inclusive, evidence-based, and gender-responsive services, with a focus on vulnerable populations. This involves promoting transparent, accountable governance to safeguard the rights of marginalized groups and foster citizen trust in the state. The Support to Justice Initiatives curbing Corruption and promoting Commercial Dispute Resolution (ACAI) project, part of the governance portfolio, aims to combat corruption and advance commercial dispute resolution in Iraq. It has five key outcomes: refining the legal and strategic framework for anti-corruption, boosting the capabilities of the justice sector to handle corruption cases, strengthening legislation and institutions for commercial dispute resolution, garnering parliamentary support for anti-corruption reforms, and enhancing transparency and public accountability. The Trial Monitoring (TM) Programme, falling under output 2, specifically focuses on monitoring high-level corruption cases in Iraq’s specialized courts.

Context

The Women Peace Mediators Network is a national initiative launched by UNDP, UN Women, and the Iraqi government, aimed at strengthening the role of women in conflict resolution, mediation, and peacebuilding in Iraq. This network aligns with Iraq’s National Strategy for Women’s Empowerment (2023-2030) and National Action Plan for UNSCR 1325, ensuring women’s inclusion in sustainable peace processes. To make this initiative accessible to international stakeholders, donors, and policymakers, UNDP seeks an Arabic-to-English Translator to accurately translate the Peace Mediators Network booklet. This document outlines the mission, objectives, challenges, and impact of women’s mediation efforts in Iraq. The volunteer’s contribution will support UNDP’s efforts in advocacy, knowledge sharing, and policy engagement, ensuring the global community is informed about women’s contributions to peacebuilding in Iraq.

Task Description

The Online Volunteer Translator will be responsible for: – Translating the full booklet (Arabic to English) while maintaining accuracy, cultural sensitivity, and readability. – Ensuring linguistic consistency and adherence to UNDP’s terminology and style guide. – Clarifying ambiguities in the text, where necessary, in consultation with the UNDP team. – Conducting quality checks to ensure grammatical correctness, clarity, and coherence in English. – Delivering the final translated document in an editable format (Word/PDF). – Participating in virtual discussions (if needed) with the UNDP team for status updates or clarifications. – Providing progress updates via email to ensure alignment with project timelines. This is a collaborative role, and the volunteer will work closely with UNDP’s gender and peacebuilding teams to ensure the final product is clear, impactful, and professional.
