Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Assists in identifying and monitoring substantive aspects of the work of the Haiti team. • Monitors relevant media outlets and selects and distributes relevant news and documents, summarizes pertinent material, collects and analyses data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports to be developed by the political affairs officers. • Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams for information in order to facilitate the in-depth analysis of the retrieved information by the supervisor and other users. Contributes to the identification and analysis of patterns in data sets. • Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Researches, extracts and compiles information and technical data on specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues. • Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information from a wide variety of information sources and databases. • Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet. • Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system. • Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications. • Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings. • Coordinating and managing the programme for visits of UN Haiti leadership to headquarters. • Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff • Performs other related work as required. Work implies frequent interaction with the following: Staff within work unit and across the Organization. Officers of Permanent Missions to the UN. Counterparts in other UN agencies. Non-governmental organizations and universities. Delegations. Results Expected: Provides reliable research on specifically defined aspects of projects/programmes. Work Experience
Several years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of socio-political and economic development or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to 3 for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations Language is ana advantage.
