JOB DESCRIPTION

Task description

The activities of this United Nations Volunteer (UNV) will contribute to increasing the understanding of climate-change and disaster-related statistics in sub-Saharan Africa, in particular trough: −Development of digital products supporting national reporting on Sendai Framework in Togo, Kenya, Burundi, Cameroon, and Ethiopia. −Engagement of Community of Practice and Visibility. Within 6 months, this UNV, under the supervision of the Programme Management Offices from the SDG and Environment Statistics Unit of the Early Warning and Assessment Division of UNEP, and in close collaboration with relevant colleagues from the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), will: −Digitalise a self-assessment tool that countries can use to analyze data availability and identify data gaps on disaster-related statistics. −Digitalize the toolkit to support implementation of the roadmap to enhance reporting in sub-Saharan Africa by 2030 including recommendations on how to ensure sustainability of government efforts in reporting and engage and increase partnerships at regional and national levels with UN agencies, academia, governments. −Support preparation of a flyer with the description of the project, and communication material such as social media cards. −Update the UNEP SDG portal with relevant information.

Required education level

Bachelor degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.

Skills and experience

computer science, information technology or other relevant programmes; experience with UNEP is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; •Professional working experience in the area software and application development and database management; working knowledge of Content Management System e.g. Drupal, PHP programming language and MySQL Relational database; •Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills; •Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; •Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; •Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; •Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, among others), email, and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment; •Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; •Sound security awareness; •Have affinity with or interest in UNEP, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN system.
