JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Position:

Under the direct supervision of the UNFPA Global Coordinator for Leave No One Behind, the intern will support the development and implementation of the activities of the Leave No One Behind unit, in particular as it relates to research and collection of data and evidence, as well as the implementation of other flagship programs focused on People of African Descent, Indigenous Peoples and other marginalized and discriminated against groups, to ensure we leave no one behind in the fulfilment of the ICPD PoA and UNFPAs three transformative results.

A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon. Periodic progress meetings will lead to a beneficial environment for the Intern, enhancing the intern’s skills and capacity in areas related to UNFPA’s mandate, including ensuring we leave No One Behind.

 

You would be responsible for:

The overall goal of the internship is to contribute to UNFPA’s efforts to ensure that no one is left behind in the fulfilment of the ICPD. Programme of Action and the achievement of UNFPA’s three transformative results: zero preventable maternal deaths, zero unmet need for family planning, and zero gender-based violence and harmful practices.

The intern will particularly support the following activities of the UNFPA’s Leave No One Behind unit:
Support work related to data and evidence focused on marginalized groups to identify barriers to sexual and reproductive health and rights and other services.
Support the development of evidence-based communication and advocacy related materials that champion the inclusion of marginalized groups in policies and programs, using research to support advocacy efforts.
Support the implementation of UNFPA’s core programs by coordinating with partners, providing logistical support, and monitoring progress.
Document and share lessons learned and best practices, maintain a resource database, draft knowledge products, and participate in knowledge-sharing events.
Contribute to joint advocacy initiatives, attend meetings, and prepare briefing materials to support UNFPA’s partnerships to advance rights and choices for all and in support of leaving no one behind.

Eligibility:

Education Requirements:

Applicants to UNFPA’s internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (A) and (B) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one year of graduation;
Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship programme and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

Other Requirements:
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. However, some experience in working with development agencies, including in a volunteer capacity is desired.
Fluency in English. Knowledge of other UN language(s) is an asset.
Strong analytical and writing skills are a must
Previous experience in related work, including projects and LNOB approach desirable
Initiative, sound judgment, and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members from different national and cultural backgrounds are a must

An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother, or sister is a UNFPA staff member is not eligible for an internship with UNFPA.

Learning Elements:

Upon completion of the assignment, and depending on its duration, the Intern will gain the following knowledge assets:
Increased understanding of the principle of Leave No One Behind its operational approach and interventions.
Understand the UNFPA’s initiative for people of African descent, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities.
Learn SRHR, LNOB and other UN technical language, working procedures, and coordination mechanisms.
Understand the dynamics of operational and programme support and communications to external and internal stakeholders.
Write and formulate substantive documents related to UNFPA mandate.
Network with UN colleagues and Civil Society Organizations.
Work experience as a team member in a multicultural setting.

Financial Aspects:

Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. The costs associated with an intern’s participation in the programme must be assumed either by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students, or by the students themselves, who will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. However, they receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. The stipend is based on the intern’s agreed place of work, which may be different from the duty station of the hiring office in cases of remote arrangements.

In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins. UNFPA does not provide medical insurance for interns.
