Mission and objectives
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the United Nations’ global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. It is on the ground in 177 countries, working on solutions to global and national development challenges. UNDP China assists China in developing its own solutions to the country’s development challenges and works to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by reducing poverty, strengthening the rule of law and democratic governance, and by promoting environmental sustainability and South-South Cooperation. CICETE is a specialized project management agency for promoting multilateral and bilateral economic and technical exchanges and international development cooperation, improving self-development capacity of assisted countries and building a community of shared future for mankind, to support China’s economic and social development and the achievement of all-round Xiao Kang Society and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Directly under the Ministry of Commerce, the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (hereafter referred to as CICETE) was founded on March 12, 1983 with the approval of the State Council. CICE-TE’s main function, delegated by the Ministry, is to coordinate the cooperation between China and UNDP,UNIDO including executing their assisted programs to China, and to manage projects of general goods supply, South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund projects, capacity building projects under the China-Aid programme to other developing countries. Since its establishment, CICETE has witnessed an extraordinary history over three decades, during which it deems its responsibility to promote economic and technical exchanges between China and other countries and makes great contributions to economic and social development in China and recipient countries. CICETE has set up and implemented over 900 projects and cooperation programmes of USD 1 billion during the cooperation with UNDP and other UN agencies, a thousand of general goods projects of China aid including nearly a hundred of humanitarian emergency rescuers for major natural disasters such as Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Fiji hurricane, Ecuador earthquake, Sri Lanka floods, Mexico earthquake, Nepal earthquake and etc.. Meanwhile, CICETE organizes high-level conferences, exhibitions and professional trainings, invites inter-national short-term and long-term consultants, and provides project management service for international organizations, government agencies and enterprises. In addition, CICETE has also been cooperating actively with international non-governmental organizations and enterprises.
Context
China SDGs Localization Umbrella Project In order to address the challenges of localizing SDGs, reach consensus among stakeholders on participating in sustainable development, and provide coordinated support, the United Nations Development Programme and the China International Economic and Technological Exchange Center have developed the “United Nations Sustainable Development Goals China Localization Umbrella Project”. The overall goal of the project is to utilize the advantages of UNDP’s platform, international network, brand effect, and global intellectual resources to sort out typical experiences and models of global sustainable development, explore models with broad participation from governments, enterprises, social organizations, academia, etc., effectively support development planning at the national and local levels, and promote the high standard implementation of sustainable development related systems, policies, and actions, To help achieve sustainable development in China from concept to practice, from goals to results. The project will revolve around the core needs of achieving sustainable development goals at the local level, and design corresponding activities under the banner of “localization of sustainable development goals” for different regional development visions; Design a localized system and implementation plan for sustainable development goals based on different levels such as national, provincial, municipal, district and county levels, and rural areas, fully considering different types such as resource-based areas, ecological areas, and industrial areas. Based on the platform and resource advantages of the United Nations Development Programme, combined with international best practices, we will focus on local sustainable development needs assessment and capacity building, provide relevant consulting services, support the construction of SDGs localization demonstration projects, and promote the exchange of sustainable development experiences; Adopting a problem diagnosis and goal oriented approach to design and implement the development model, technical path, and support system of SDGs, introducing the participation of enterprises and social funds, forming relevant policy recommendations, and exploring the implementation path and model of SDGs in rural, district, and city levels in China. The project covers the following parts: ● Initiative: Rural revitalization and promotion of inclusive livelihoods ● Pipeline Development: UNDP-CICETE collaborations on SDG localization ● Event – Capacity Building: Project Management Office staff on Results Based Management and development effectiveness ● Event – Management: UNDP-CICETE Annual Management Review Retreat ● Knowledge Products: UNDP-CICETE knowledge products on SDG localization
Task Description
Under the primary supervision of CICETE, the UN Volunteers will undertake the following tasks: ● Support CICETE to carry out cooperative projects with UNDP and UNV; ● Assist in the development of new projects; ● Support CICETE and UNDP in capacity building activities. Furthermore, UNVs are encouraged to: ● Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking an active part in UNV activities (for instance, IVD celebration events); ● Get acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; ● Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking; Contribute news and articles on field experiences and submit them to UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; ● Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UNV volunteers; ● Promote online volunteering and encourage individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering Service whenever technically feasible.

Living conditions and remarks
The duty station of the national UN Volunteer is located in Beijing city, where modest public infrastruc-ture and excellent health services are available. It is the foremost political and cultural metropolis in China. In general, rent for apartments in central locations is high relative to other regions in China, but quality is good. Beijing is well served by many shopping malls, large supermarket chains and international brands. Buses and subways are the most common form of mass transportation. Metered taxis are widely available and domestic and regional travel by train and airplane is popular.
