World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the world’s leading conservation organizations, seeks a

Coastal Tourism Analyst Intern.

Major Function

The Coastal Tourism Analyst Intern will support advancing the WWF US Oceans Team’s new Coastal Tourism Strategy by conducting analyses to identify best fit locations within WWF-US Oceans’ priority seascapes (Eastern Pacific, Southwest Indian Ocean, and Western Pacific) to launch new potential coastal and marine conservation tourism programs. To support this objective, the intern will:

Conduct a GIS mapping exercise to combine several data layers and identify best fit opportunities for tourism engagement within Oceans Team priority seascapes. This would include layers such as: WWF-US Ocean team’s existing portfolio of projects, prospective funding-ready projects (with a focus on blue forest work), existing Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) destination assessment locations, GSTC member countries, tour locations for Natural Habitat Adventures and other US-based travel companies, locations and operations of US headquartered hospitality companies, WWF Network Offices within priority seascapes with tourism strategies and/or good government contacts, Nature-Based Solutions Origination Platform (NBS OP) landscapes, Project Finance for Permanence (PFPs), and Bezos Earth Fund Mangroves for Communities and Climate project sites.
With the support from Seascape leads, meet virtually with representatives from WWF country offices within the priority seascapes to gather input on priority places to be considered.

The intern will collaborate with the Senior Program Officer (SPO) leading the Coastal Tourism strategy, Seascape leads, and relevant lead Conservation Scientists.

Responsibilities

Support SPO in gathering all mapping layer information + establishing criteria
Map all available data
Interview WWF country office representatives to gather input on country priority locations
Analyze mapping results to determine best opportunity locations
Recommend three locations to evaluate against the Conservation Tourism Scorecard
Present results of the project to select members of the WWF US Oceans Team
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

Only enrolled students are eligible for this internship as you must be able to receive academic credit from your current academic institution. Able to work either part time or full time, depending on class schedule and availability.
Expertise in GIS (ArcGIS or other software)
Conservation and/or science background
Grounding in research methods
Coursework in data and analytics (i.e. data science, modeling, statistical computing, data visualization)

Preferred Qualifications:

Expertise in sustainable travel and tourism a plus
Expertise in marine science, ecology, and/or geography a plus

Presentation development and execution
Navigating large Environmental NGO teams and information gathering
Business communication skills (written and verbal)

Compensation:

Unpaid. For all unpaid internships, applicants must be enrolled in school and be able to obtain academic course credit from their university.
