JOB DESCRIPTION

Mission and objectives

With its specific mandate associated with the UN Conventions, protocols and universal instruments, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is the UN main agency in the fight against illicit drugs, crime, corruption, and terrorism. As the guardian of UN’s Drugs conventions, UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and its protocols, UNODC is uniquely placed to assist with countering organized crime threats. UNODC has the mandate to support Member States in enhancing respective national and international responses as well as to foster international cooperation. UNODC contributes to peace and security, especially with regard to the 19 international legal instruments against terrorism. From a sustainable development perspective, organized crime, one mandated area of UNODC, has devastating effects. It threatens peace and human security, violates human rights, and undermines the economic, social, cultural, political, and civil development of societies around the world. The UNODC Regional Office for South Asia is located in New Delhi (India) and covers six countries of the region: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The UNODC Programme Office in Nepal is based at Kathmandu. Under its Regional Programme for South Asia, UNODC is delivering technical assistance to South Asia under the following five sub programmes: (1) countering transnational organized crime; (2) a comprehensive response to the drug problem (drug trafficking & drugs and health); (3) countering corruption; (4) terrorism prevention; (5) criminal justice and crime prevention.

Context

UNODC’s RiseUp4Peace initiative is a youth-focused education and awareness program designed to promote peacebuilding, strengthen resilience, and prevent crime. It empowers students and educators to engage with critical social challenges by fostering knowledge, dialogue, and action. The initiative addresses a range of pressing issues relevant to young people today, including: ● Drug use and abuse ● Cybercrime, including online exploitation ● Gender-based violence and discrimination ● Mental health challenges ● Peer pressure, social comparison, and bullying Aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), RiseUp4Peace positions youth as agents of change in building peaceful, just, and inclusive societies. To effectively tailor the program to Nepal’s specific context, a baseline survey is being conducted in schools across the country.

Task Description

The Online Volunteers support the implementation of the baseline survey for UNODC’s ‘RiseUp4Peace’ initiative. It mainly includes the design, dissemination, follow-up, and analysis of surveys for/received from students and educators in education institutions across Nepal. The findings guide context-specific adaptations to enhance the program’s relevance and impact. Key Responsibilities: ● Develop two survey methods/instruments for students and educators in close coordination with the UNODC Nepal team. ● Reach out to pre-identified education institutions and call to distribute the surveys in the most appropriate and efficient way. ● Conduct follow-up communications to ensure the largest possible number of responses. ● Organize, compile and analyze the data received from surveys and confirm correctness. ● Prepare a summary report with key findings and a preliminary survey analysis. Deliverables: ● By week 3: Draft surveys for students and educators accomplished. ● Throughout the assignment: Survey dissemination, follow-up, and coordination with education institutions. ● Final Week: Compiled dataset and summary report with analysis finalized.
