JOB DESCRIPTION

 

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

The World Food Programme (WFP) Ethiopia Medical Assistance Team (EMAT) operates a network of clinics across the country offering primary and emergency healthcare services to UN staff, dependents, consultants, and volunteers.

The position holder will be located in UNHCR Bokh sub-offices where WFP is setting up a clinic and ALS ambulance services on behalf of UNHCR.

The Driver reports technically to the Fleet focal point in Gode and administratively to EMAT project manager.

JOB PURPOSE: To provide safe, timely, and confidential emergency transportation services for UNHCR staff, their eligible dependents and other authorized users using the designated ambulance.

Maintain the ambulance in good working condition ready for deployment at anytime, carry out daily ambulance checklist and report any issues.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

Drive the WFP ambulance only for authorized emergency medical transport and medically approved referrals, strictly avoid using for personal or unauthorized purposes.

Operate the ambulance in compliance with UN and government road safety rules and approved routes.
Respond promptly to dispatch instructions from nurses/doctors and be available for 24/7 duty calls, including weekends and holidays ensuring proper handovers when going on leave.
Perform daily pre-departure and post-return checks on brakes, oil, water, tires, battery, lights, sirens, and other systems and complete and submit the Ambulance Driver Daily Checklist to the supervisor.
Always keep the ambulance clean, both inside and outside, and follow infection prevention procedures after every patient transport.
Monitor fuel levels and ensure the ambulance is always refueled, serviced on time, and ready for emergency response.
Report any mechanical issues, dashboard warnings, maintenance needs, or malfunctions to the transport manager in Gode immediately and assist in arranging repairs.
Log all trips accurately in the official WFP Ambulance Trip Logbook, including dispatch and return times, destinations, mileage, fuel usage, and passenger details as per WFP guidlines.
Use VHF/HF or satellite radio systems professionally to maintain constant communication with base and escort staff during trips.
Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient-related information during and after service, in line with WFP/UNHCR policy.
Assist medical personnel during transport by supporting basic first aid efforts, and safely loading and securing patients and medical equipment in the ambulance.
Ensuring respectful interaction with patients, medical staff, and hospital personnel.
Stay calm and focused under pressure, including during emergencies or in hostile environments, to ensure the safety of patients and crew.
Always follow WFP/UNHCR security clearance and movement procedures.
In case of accidents, take appropriate actions as per WFP rules and inform the supervisor immediately.
Liaise and coordinate with local authorities, when necessary, to ensure safe and authorized ambulance movement.
Ensuring respectful interaction with patients, medical staff, and hospital personnel.
Perform any other related duties as assigned by the nurses and doctors, project manager, transport manager, Bokh sub-office management or others.

STANDARD MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Completion of secondary school education. Valid national driver’s license (Category III or equivalent). Ambulance Driver Training Certificate and Basic First Aid Certificate is added advantage. Defensive Driving Certification is preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years work experience as a Driver, and a clean safe driving record with experience in driving various models/sizes of vehicles including 4X4 manual transmission vehicles.

Experience in defensive driving and first aid training.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE:

Knowledge of driving rules and regulations.
Skills in motor vehicle repairs
Use of VHF /HF radio
Basic computer skills
Knowledge of road networks in the region.

LANGUAGES: Fluency in both oral and written communication in English and Somali.
