The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, an international court with its seat in
Hamburg, Germany, has the following vacancy:
French Translator/Reviser (P-4)
Functions: Under the supervision of the Head of Linguistic Services and the general direction
of the Registrar, the main tasks of the incumbent include:
Translating on a self-revising basis from English all texts of a legal, administrative,
financial or other nature prepared by the Tribunal and its Registry, or revising their
translations;
Editing texts of the Tribunal and its Registry originally drafted in French;
Correcting verbatim records during hearings;
Sourcing of the reference or terminology material needed for the text at hand;
Coordinating the work of internal and external French translators;
Helping maintain glossaries and translation tools;
Performing any other tasks necessitated by the work of the Tribunal.
Qualifications and experience: At least seven years of experience in translation, including
a minimum of four years of revision in an international organization or court. French main
language and excellent command of English; full computer literacy and good knowledge of
technical tools for translators. Familiarity with terminology of the law of the sea, international
law and related areas would be an important asset. To have passed the United Nations
competitive examination for translators would be an advantage.
