The British Embassy Zagreb is the representative office of the UK Government in Croatia, representing British political, economic and consular interests in the country. Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Zagreb is looking for a Communications and Public Diplomacy Assistant. You will be a member of the Embassy’s Political & Communications team, which co-ordinates the UK’s engagement with Croatia across a wide range of issues, from security and defence to clean energy, science and technology and culture. You will work closely with Political and Communication team colleagues to support team objectives, including promoting Embassy activities to the public, supporting Embassy project work, and assisting with organisation and running of the Ambassador’s regional visits and inward senior UK visits, as well as high-profile soft power events such as the annual King’s Birthday Party celebration.

You will be responsible for running British Embassy Zagreb’s website and social media channels (Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn), under the supervision of our Head of Communications, as well as creating and publishing digital media content promoting Embassy and UK Government priorities and values. As a member of the Communications Team, you will assist in public affairs, monitor media reporting and conduct press briefings. You will also be responsible for our public diplomacy, to influence and inspire Croatians, showcasing the best of Britain and its culture, including education.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Social media (in cooperation with Head of Comms) (40%):

  • Running Embassy website and digital media channels, both in terms of content and performance.
  • Collaborating with all Embassy sections, including Political, Trade, Consular and Defence, to promote their programmes, events and other activities to the public, alongside providing advice to Embassy staff on own their social media activity to maximise engagement.
  • Co-creating and implementing digital communications plans for senior visits and the Ambassador’s regional travel.

Political section support (40%):

  • Assisting delivery of Political Section’s projects and activities, including logistical support and communications plans.
  • Assisting delivery of Embassy public events, including forums, receptions and, most notably, the King’s Birthday Party. This entails both advising on and creating visual branding and digital communication plans, along with providing administrative support such as compiling guest lists, sending invitations, recording RSVPs and answering correspondence.
  • Delivering Embassy internal press briefings (in a rota with other colleagues).
  • Providing cover for the Communications Advisor and Ambassador’s Executive Assistant during leave.

Public diplomacy (20%):

  • Promoting British culture, building cultural links, and creating a positive UK brand within Croatia, via events, online communications, and targeted engagement with those with specific links to the UK.
  • Collaborating with external Project implementing partners to communicate impactful stories with the wider public.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Fluent in English and Croatian (both written and spoken, minimum C1* level for CEFR framework)
  • Strong interest and understanding of communications, culture, media and politics
  • Previous experience managing professional social media and producing content
  • Initiative, creativity and resourcefulness
  • High work standards and ability to meet deadlines
  • Strong personal organisation and communication skills
  • Social Media skills (Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn)
  • Microsoft Office skills

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Smartphone photography and videography plus editing and design skills
  • Previous experience working in Government, Diplomatic Mission, International or Multinational organisation
  • Previous experience of event organisation
  • Confidence in dealing with senior management
  • Readiness to work overtime as required (in return for time off in lieu)

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract of 12 months. The monthly salary for this position is €2,612.17 gross + €47.78 transport allowance.

The role would be subject to a 6-month probationary period.

Working patterns: The position is based on a 39.5 hour working week, with standard core working hours Monday to Thursday from 08:30-17:00 hours including a one-hour lunch break at a time dependant on that day’s schedule. On Friday core working hours are from 0830-1400 hours, without a lunch break.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background and security clearance and must have pre-existing work authorisation for Croatia in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Zagreb are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Croatian employment law.

Visa/Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Croatia.
