Who are we?

The British Consulate General (BCG) in Milan is a part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. Our network is recruiting for a Driver/Messenger.

Main purpose of the role:

To provide a high standard of transport and logistics support to His Majesty’s Consul General in Milan, visiting officials and delegations from the UK including high level officials, as well as other staff eg from Consular or DBT as business needs demand. Core duties include driving, some office and computer-based tasks as well as some basic repair/handyman duties. Out of region travel is a key part of this role requiring occasional overnight stay.

Roles and Responsibilities:

General driving duties:

  • Undertake all driving responsibilities within the city of Milan/Lombardy region and across Italy as occasionally required, including deliveries and any ad-hoc requirements.
  • Plan and research routes to destination to ensure safe and efficient journeys, using available technology.
  • Complete journey record sheets including miles covered and petrol purchases.
  • The successful candidate will wear a uniform.

Care of vehicles:

  • Keep the vehicles clean, secured and serviced.
  • Conduct regular checks of tyre pressure, hydraulic fluid, oil, battery level and fuel.
  • Identify any defects as early as possible and keep any potential risk to a minimum level.
  • Ensure vehicle maintenance, servicing, and insurance renewal as necessary.

Office and administrative duties:

  • Prepare all paperwork, invoices and overtime sheets for transport management within the deadlines.
  • Contribute to logistics and delivery of high-level visits, including driving schedules etc.
  • Support office tasks as directed by the team’s supervisor.
  • Support with minor maintenance tasks in the Consulate and Residence premises, including carrying out small repairs.
  • Occasional support with external contractors, including supervision of maintenance/building works being carried out.
  • Contribute to corporate activities and initiatives outside of own job for the wider network’s good eg Inclusion and Diversity Group, Learning and Development Group etc.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Italian proficient (minimum C1 level under the CEFR or equivalent*)
  • English intermediate (minimum B2 level under the CEFR or equivalent*)
  • Valid clean EU driving licence;
  • Proven minimum 2 years professional driving experience;
  • Good communication skills and ability to manage internal and external relationships with a variety of stakeholders including senior officers;
  • Ability to work under pressure and as part of a team;
  • Strong time management skills;
  • Well-developed sense of safety; service and customer focus approach;
  • Good IT skills with knowledge of the full MS Office package.
  • Ability to juggle and co-ordinate often competing and complex requirements.

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Knowledge of wider Italy road/motorway system;
  • Knowledge of roads and travel routes throughout the city of Milan and Northern Italy, with ability to use relevant technology, eg sat nav;
  • Previous experience working in a foreign diplomatic mission or an international organisation.

Other benefits and conditions of employment

This is a full-time temporary position with a contract of 12 months, graded S1 according to the FCDO grading structure. The monthly gross salary is Euro 2,469. The salary is paid monthly 14 times per year including € 10.33 EDR paid 13 times per year, with double salary payments in June and December. If working less than a full calendar year, the additional salary payments will be pro-rata.

Working hours are 40 hrs (net) per week Monday to Friday 09.00 – 18.00. Some flexibility will be required for evening and weekend events, which may mean a later start/finish.

The appointment is subject to security clearance, professional background check and the successful completion of an 4 month probationary period. The starting date may be delayed depending on circumstances at the time and this will be agreed with the selected candidate.

All staff employed by the British Consulate General are subject to Italian income tax rate deductions (IRPEF).  However the administration of these tax payments will vary depending on nationality.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Italian State Social Security Scheme. Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Italian employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Italy and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract. If requirements change additional eligibility information will be shared during the recruitment process.
