UNODC’s mandate is to support Member States in the prevention of illicit drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism which hare encompassed in the framework of the UNODC Regional Programme for South-Eastern Europe 2024/2029. The three pillars of the UNODC field work are:
– Field-based technical cooperation projects enhancing the capacity of Member States to counteract illicit drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism.
– Research and analytical work to increase knowledge and understanding of drug and crime-related issues, and expand the evidence base for policy and operational decisions.
– Normative, policy and advocacy work to assist states in the ratification and implementation of international treaties and the development of domestic legislation and policies in the thematic areas under UNODC mandates.
UNODC advocates a balanced approach to drug control, emphasising the importance of preventive education and treatment for addicts, as well as measures to reduce production and trafficking. UNODC assists governments and law enforcement agencies in increasing the effectiveness of domestic legislation as well as in enhancing their capacities to investigate, dismantle and prosecute trafficking groups, through technical assistance, training and the provision of modern technical equipment.
