Program Background
Tonga’s Department of Energy (DoE) sits within the Ministry for Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC). The Ministry is the custodian of the Tonga Energy Road Map Plus (TERMPLUS) 2021 – 2035 which lays out the key targets, approaches and actions needed to decrease Tonga’s dependence on fossil fuels and deliver an affordable, accessible, inclusive, resilient, sustainable and secure energy system.
TASP is supporting the Department of Energy (DoE) to develop a National Certificate IV in Sustainable Energy (Solar) in conjunction with Tonga National University’s (TNU) School of Science and Technology (SST). The Australian Government has also committed to establishing a national solar training facility in Tongatapu.
The project will require engagement with multiple stakeholders including:
· The Sustainable Energy Industry Association of the Pacific Islands (SEIAPI)
· The Pacific Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (PCREEE), based in Nuku’alofa and co-hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC).
· Tonga Power Limited (TPL)
· Tonga Energy Commission (TEC)
· Tonga National Qualifications and Accreditation Board (TNQAB)
· Government Ministries
· Private Industries

The Role
The Adviser will use their technical expertise and experience in renewable energy training in the Pacific to design and develop a National Certificate in Solar Energy Level IV to be delivered by the TNU’s School of Science and Technology (SST).
The Adviser will work closely with DoE, SST, TNQAB and industry stakeholders to ensure the course aligns with plans for sustainable course delivery, meets national accreditation requirements and is contextualised for the Tongan setting.
Graduates of the Certificate IV in Sustainable Energy (Solar) will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to design, install, repair and maintain domestic and commercial solar energy systems.
