Background:
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Since the outbreak of armed conflict in Sudan on April 15, 2023, fighting has persisted—especially in Khartoum and Darfur—despite multiple ceasefire attempts. The conflict has led to severe shortages of food, water, medicine, electricity, and fuel, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation, particularly for women and girls, who face heightened risks due to malnutrition and disrupted aid.
Gender-based violence (GBV) has escalated, with over 2.7 million women and girls already at risk before the conflict. The breakdown of law and order has led to increased reports of sexual violence and rape.
Despite these challenges, Sudanese women have shown resilience and leadership, organizing peace initiatives across regions like Blue Nile, Darfur, Kordofan, and the Eastern and Northern regions. These women-led groups have issued joint peace demands and are actively advocating for an end to the war.
UN Women, in collaboration with partners such as the African Union Special Envoy on Women, Peace, and Security and the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN), has supported these efforts through coordination and advocacy platforms. A key initiative includes the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF), which Sudan has benefited from since 2021. The fund supports:
