The UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme, Indian Ocean West Programme targets support across the criminal justice systems of States in the Indian Ocean region, including the police, prosecutors, judges and prison staff. A wide array of support is provided including training and expert technical advice, aimed at increasing capacity to prosecute and detain suspects of piracy and wider maritime crime.
This position is located in the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme office, UNODC Pro-gramme Office in Mozambique (POMOZ), in Maputo, Mozambique. The incumbent will perform his/her duties and responsibilities under the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator for the Indian Ocean West Programme of the UNODC Global Maritime Crime Programme.
• Work experience in the field of International Relations, Political science, business or public administration, maritime security or international maritime law;
• Experience in the conduct of research and/or progressively responsible experience in programme or project administration, technical cooperation or related area is required;
• Experience of working in an international environment is desirable;
• A broad understanding of the maritime situation in the Indian Ocean is desirable;
• Experience in the management and implementation of project activity is desirable;
• Experience in organizing regional and international conferences is desirable;
• Experience in volunteerism is an asset;

The Republic of Mozambique, a southeastern African country, is situated along the Indian Ocean coast, just below the Equator. Mozambique gained independence in 1975 after nearly five centuries of Portuguese colonial rule. The country’s territory includes several offshore islands and extends in-land to form a broad plateau region. Maputo, located in the far south, serves as the national capital and principal port city.
Mozambique shares borders with Tanzania to the north, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe to the northwest and west, Eswatini (Swaziland) and South Africa to the southwest, and the Indian Ocean to the east. The country’s coastline stretches for about 2,500 kilometres (1,550 miles), one of the long-est on the African continent, providing rich marine resources and major ports such as Beira and Nacala.
Mainland Mozambique can be divided into several main climatic and topographic zones: the low-lying coastal plains along the Indian Ocean; the central plateau with rolling hills and savannas; and the western highlands bordering Malawi and Zimbabwe. The Zambezi River, one of Africa’s largest, flows from west to east through the country before emptying into the Indian Ocean. The climate is generally tropical, with a rainy season from November to April and a dry season from May to Octo-ber. Temperatures are moderated by altitude and proximity to the ocean, with warmer, humid condi-tions along the coast and cooler climates inland and in the highlands.
