Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

Main purpose of job:

We are seeking an experienced Groundskeeper with 3–5 years of practical experience in general maintenance, gardening, and pool care. This role combines horticultural care with basic handyman duties to ensure a clean, secure, and well-maintained environment across the Residence and associated properties. The position is responsible for maintaining safety, functionality, and aesthetic standards, and includes support for High Commission events and functions. The ideal candidate will demonstrate adaptability, a willingness to learn, creative problem-solving, teamwork, and a solution-oriented mindset.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve:

Handyman Duties (50%)

  • Perform general repairs and maintenance across all assigned properties.
  • Advise when external contractors are required.
  • Conduct regular checks on water tanks, A/C units, and electrical systems; carry out minor repairs and escalate issues as needed.
  • Maintain and repair gardening tools and equipment.
  • Repair fencing, edging, and other garden structures.
  • Assist with water tank cleaning and monthly water meter readings.
  • Tend to electrical generator checks and minor maintenance.
  • Perform minor plumbing tasks such as replacing hoses and applying temporary fixes for leaks.
  • Carry out basic electrical tasks including changing lightbulbs and plugs across the estates portfolio.
  • Assist with rubbish collection.

Gardening, Landscaping & Pool Care (30%)

  • Perform initial landscaping and ongoing maintenance of gardens and green spaces across the estate.
  • Monitor plant health, water and feed plants, mow lawns, trim trees and shrubs, weed gardens, and fertilize as needed.
  • Conduct rehabilitation and replanting work, including basic tree surgery, felling, and planting.
  • Remove vegetation that may compromise security or structural integrity.
  • Maintain clean and safe paths, drainage channels, and pool areas.
  • Conduct routine pool cleaning and basic water quality checks to ensure hygiene and safety.
  • Deliver and maintain houseplants for High Commission offices on a quarterly basis.

Event Support (10%)

  • Assist with setup and breakdown for events/functions, including furniture and equipment.
  • Provide logistical support during events and serve guests for large functions (as ad-hoc overtime).
  • Ensure event spaces are clean and functional before and after use.

Administrative, Safety and Other Duties (10%)

  • Assist with contractor supervision for repairs, maintenance, and construction work.
  • Advise management on plant and supply costs.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Report property-related issues to the Corporate Services Team.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork by supporting colleagues and following the direction of your line manager.
  • Stay updated on FCDO policies and standards.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in service of the British High Commission.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure)

  • Cost reporting, stock keeping, asset management.
