Expected duration

Duties and Responsibilities

Background: The role of oceans in climate action is increasingly recognized in international climate processes, including the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan adopted by the UNFCCC 27th COP in 2022 and the UNFCCC Global Stocktake which called for scaling up ocean-based mitigation actions, among others. ESCAP mandates reflect the importance of this issue in the region. ESCAP Resolution 79/2 on accelerating ocean-based action to combat climate change and the requested dialogue on ocean-based climate action (OBCA) convened in September 2024 resulted in the launch of an Initiative for Regional Cooperation on Ocean-based Climate Action (the Regional Initiative), proposed and facilitated by the Governments of Indonesia, Fiji and the Maldives. In alignment with ESCAP Resolution 76/1, the Regional Initiative focuses on strengthening cooperation and promoting partnerships in four key themes: Protecting and enhancing blue carbon ecosystems; Decarbonizing shipping and maritime connectivity; Accelerating the deployment of ocean-based renewable energy; and Enhancing ocean-climate resilience. With the financial support from the Korea-ESCAP Cooperation Fund (KECF), the Information and Communications Technology and Disaster Risk Reduction Division (IDD) of ESCAP leads the priority theme on Ocean-Climate Resilience, and is expected to organize a workshop in November 2026, whose results will be reported at the Regional Ocean Forum in 2026. Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Economic Affairs Officer, Disaster Risk Reduction Section and guidance of Chief, Disaster Risk Reduction Section, the Consultant will facilitate the preparation and organization of a workshop on ocean climate resilience.
