Technical cooperation appointments are not expected to lead to a career in the ILO and they do not carry any expectation of renewal or conversion to any other type of appointment in the Organization. A one-year fixed-term contract will be given. Extensions of technical cooperation contracts are subject to various elements including the following: availability of funds, continuing need of the functions and satisfactory conduct and performance.

*Conditions of employment for external candidates: In conformity with existing ILO practice, the appointment of an external candidate will normally be made at the first step of this grade. The entry level salary for this position is 1,651,201 (Kenyan Shilling) yearly.

Introduction

The Government of the Netherlands has been supporting a partnership initiative built on the combined strengths, experience and values of specific development and humanitarian organizations towards a new paradigm in responding to forced displacement crises. The partners include: the Government of the Netherlands, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the ILO, the UNHCR, UNICEF and the World Bank. The Partnership supports to transform the way governments and other stakeholders, including the private sector, respond to forced displacement crises – and in particular: (1) to enhance the enabling environment for the socio-economic inclusion of forcibly displaced persons (to mitigate their plight during years of exile and to best prepare them for their return); (2) to enhance access to education and child protection for vulnerable children on the move; and (3) to strengthen the resilience of host communities through inclusive socio-economic development that also benefits forcibly displaced persons.
In this context, the International Labour Organization (ILO) seeks to recruit a driver who will assist implementation of the Inclusive Jobs and Education for Host Communities, Refugees and Other Forcibly Displaced Persons in Kenya – PROSPECTS

Reporting Lines
Under the overall responsibility of the Country Director for ILO Country Office for the United Republic of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi (CO-Dar es Salaam) – driver will directly report to the Chief Technical Advisor for PROSPECTS based in the Nairobi.

Description of Duties

  • Ensure the provision of safe and reliable driving services. Drive the Office project team, and other authorized personnel and visitors. Meet officials and visitors at the airport including assisting, where necessary, with protocol, visa and customs formalities;
  • Collect and deliver mail, pouch, documents, and other items for official purposes.;
  • Ensure cost-savings through proper use of vehicle and accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and documentation
  • Ensure proper day-to-day maintenance of the project vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes and water levels, car washing, etc. to always keep the vehicle clean and in good running condition;
  • Ensure availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit and other MOSS-compliant equipment, and necessary spare parts in assigned vehicles
  • Keep records of use of vehicle, daily mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, greasing and other services;
  • Ensure that the steps required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accident;
  • Ensure that all required documents including vehicle insurance, logs, fitness are available and updated;
  • Ensure that all required supplies, such as the first aid kit, fire extinguisher, radios and required spare parts are in working condition;
  • Inform the supervisor in a timely manner of (re)registration and insurance procedures for all the office vehicles.
  • Keep updated of the security situation, risk and inform office for alternatives.
  • Assist office staff in filing, photocopying and maintaining stores. Assist in the mailing, collection and distribution of documents and publications including to ministries and banks. Arrange to pay office telephone and other bills. Perform data entry duties;
  • Help project team with logistics such as arranging meetings, travel plans, managing project stationaries and documentation for the project;
  • Perform other related duties as required as may be assigned by his/her supervisor.

Required qualifications

Education

Completion of Secondary School education, valid driving licence, knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair

Experience

At least three (03) years’ work experience as a driver with a safe driving record and Clerical Support Staff.

Languages

Excellent command of English and Kiswahili is required.

Competencies

  • Excellent knowledge of local driving rules and regulations
  • Good knowledge of local roads and conditions
  • Good knowledge of chauffeur protocol and courtesies.
  • Good knowledge of security issues
  • Proven ability to keep accurate records of the use of vehicle
  • Skills in minor vehicle repair
  • Ability to use a GPS data recorder, report position, and operate all applicable UHF/VHF and other two-way communication devices
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and ability to use standard office equipment.
  • Basic computer skills to record information in IT systems
  • Demonstrate polite, courteous and cooperative behaviour.
  • Demonstrate high level of collegiality and cooperation, good team worker.
  • Good knowledge of rules and procedures on vehicle management including maintenance of official vehicles and knowledge of mechanics and maintenance and repair of vehicles
  • Defensive driving skills and ensuring the safety of passengers.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment and to demonstrate gender-sensitive and non-discriminatory behaviour and attitudes
