JOB DESCRIPTION

Organization Mission

The United Nations Commission on International Trade Law is the core legal body of the United Nations system in the field of international trade law. A legal body with universal membership specializing in commercial law reform worldwide for over 50 years, UNCITRAL”s business is the modernization and harmonization of rules on international business.

Context

In 1988, UNCITRAL decided to set up a system, called Case Law on UNCITRAL Texts (CLOUT) for collecting and disseminating information on judicial decisions and arbitral awards relating to UNCITRAL legislative texts,
in order to contribute to the uniform interpretation and application of those texts. The information is accessible through a database that is hosted on the UNCITRAL website (https://uncitral.un.org/en/case_law). Practitioners,
judges, arbitrators, academics and several other users of UNCITRAL texts can run unlimited and free of charge searches of case law abstracts (i.e., short summaries) available in the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) and have access to the corresponding full texts in original language of the court decisions and arbitral awards. The database comprises materials from over 80 countries and case law from new countries is regularly added. The abstracts are published as part of a document – defined “CLOUT issue” – that usually bundles together 8-10 abstracts. CLOUT relies upon a network of
contributors, the CLOUT Network (https://uncitral.un.org/en/cloutnetwork), that consists of National Correspondents, Institutional Partners and Voluntary Contributors providing the abstracts.
In 2015 a new and improved version of the database was launched. The purpose of the assignment is to enhance visibility of the CLOUT system and database across the world using video production tools and state-of-the-art communication techniques, as well as to raise awareness among interested stakeholders of the CLOUT database, its functions and ways to contribute effectively to the system.

Key Responsibilities

This assignment includes the production of two videos for the purposes of CLOUT. In particular, this assignment involves:

a) the production of a 5 minute video explaining the objectives, nature and scope of the CLOUT database for the promotion of the CLOUT system itself; and
b) the production of a 10-15 minute video that would include user-friendly guidelines and clearly explain how to draft efficiently and effectively a CLOUT abstract pursuant to United Nations guidelines and UNCITRAL-specific practices.

Further information on the CLOUT database and system is available at: https://uncitral.un.org/en/case_law.

The collaboration is expected to start on October 8th, 2025, after which relevant CLOUT explanatory materials, including two scripts for the two videos, will be provided that will form the basis for the production of the videos. Throughout the collaboration, the relevant supervisor(s) will be available via e-mail and/or virtual meetings. A first product of the two videos will be made available during the third week of the assignment. Comments shared will be incorporated into the final products by the end of the collaboration (last week of assignment).

Required Skills and Experience

Video editing experience, demonstrated through a portfolio or previous work samples, as well as strong writing, editing and storytelling skills are required.
