Duties and Responsibilities

BACKGROUND
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.
The Urban Practices Branch is the Agency’s skills centre for production of tools and methodologies. It develops normative guidance and cutting-edge tools through the following communities of urban practices: (i) policy, legislation, and governance; (ii) urban planning, finance, and economic development; (iii) urban basic services; and (iv) land, housing, and shelter.
Land, Housing and Shelter Section has the mandate to provide professional skills and to develop normative knowledge and products that support a) the equitable supply of serviced land at scale; b) efficient and effective land management systems; c) freedom from arbitrary or forced eviction and the protection of security of tenure for all; d) the progressive achievement of universal access to housing meeting the requirements for an adequate standard of living; e) participatory urban regeneration and slum upgrading initiatives. It focuses on research and tool development also to backstop the Global Campaign on Sustainable Urbanization of the agency, to supply technical advice to Member States and backstop the Regional offices and other sections of UN-Habitat.
In this context Land, Housing and Shelter Section is seeking to hire an experienced Graphic Designer to work with a team of core staff members to implement the GLTN Programme Phase 3 particularly as relates to the production of publications. The incumbent is expected to produce publications based on the approved GLTN branding guidelines.

RESPONSIBILITES
Under the supervision of the Section Leader and in close collaboration with the focal persons, the expert will undertake the following responsibilities:

1. Graphically design and layout long texts, i.e. technical reports, into finalized texts for publication (print and/ or web);
2. Graphically design and layout short texts, including report summaries, briefs, etc., into finalized texts for publication (print and/ or web);
3. Design and source promotional items for GLTN;
4. Implement the GLTN branding guide and design to enhance the image of the Network and UN- Habitat;
5. Enhance the brand guidelines and templates for communication material and publications for new GLTN design;
6. Edit and prepare final version of publications and materials to be utilized for publication purposes by UN-Habitat.

Qualifications/special skills

First level university degree in graphical design or equivalent is required.
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in graphical design and layout of publications for an international market and audience (i.e. a range of various audiences) is required.
Strong people and process skills with proven ability to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the post advertised, excellent proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.
