JOB DESCRIPTION

Background and Organizational Context

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen provides comprehensive and timely information on humanitarian issues and relief efforts of UN agencies, NGOs and international institutions operating throughout the Republic of Yemen. The OCHA Reporting and Communication Unit (RCU)is an integral part of the OCHA office and provides services both internally and externally. The RCU assists in improving the Office’s information flow, standardization, and security within and between the various offices in Yemen. The CRU, Translation and interpretation and mapping) to Humanitarian Partners in-country, including UN Agencies, NGOs, donors, international organizations and national counterparts.

The Interpretation / Translation Associate (G7) will be based in Sana’a with frequent field mission to different Governorates and areas of concern. S/he will be a member of the OCHA Yemen Office with a key role in supporting coordination, communication, and translation activities. Under the direct supervision of the Head of CRU with overall direction of the Head of OCHA and working as an integral part of the organization’s Team, the incumbent will be ensuring maximum professionalism and adding capacity in supporting the mandate of OCHA.

Position Purpose

The Interpretation / Translation Associate (G7) will have a key role in supporting coordination, communication, and translation activities. Under the direct supervision of the Head of CRU with overall direction of the Head of OCHA and working as an integral part of the organization’s Team, the incumbent will be ensuring maximum professionalism and adding capacity in supporting the mandate of OCHA.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

Under the supervision of the Head of CPU, The Interpretation / Translation Associate will be responsible for the following duties:

Support UNOCHA and ensure proper Interprets/Translate for UNOCHA 

  • In-house official meetings and workshops.
  • Officials and consultants during their visits and missions including workshops and conferences.
  • Text contained in figures, boxes, tables, photo captions, sources, and covers. 

Ensure proper and accurate translation/ interpretation services 

  • The translator is expected to perform terminology research (i.e. on UN/UNOCHA/UN Term websites and others) to ensure the accuracy and appropriateness of all translations. The translator is also responsible for ensuring quality, smoothness and accuracy of the entire document and interpretation.

Translation of UNOCHA internal documents such as

  • Mission, project annual and other types of reports, publications, UNOCHA messages, and texts for the UNOCHA Bulletin (internal electronic newsletter) and Intranet; UNOCHA rules, regulations and guidelines, any other internal texts as required. The translated text has to be delivered in MS Word or Excel files, as required, following the formatting of the original document as needed.

Translation of UNOCHA PI Reposting external documents and products such as:

  • Information Graphics (Dashboard, Snapshot), Mapping, and materials for the media, including press releases, media advisories, publications, reports, and other editorial-related texts. These texts could be for print publications, broadcasts, or the Field Office Website. The translated text has to be delivered in MS Word or Excel files as required.

To carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibilities of the post.

  • Perform any other duties as may be requested by Public Information Unit manager and/or OCHA Head of Office.

Required Skills and Experience

Education 

  • Completion of Secondary education is required. 
  • University Degree in translation, English language, or English literature, or other related fields, or equivalent would be desirable, but it is not a requirement

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in Translation, Literature or Language or other related filed with secondary education is required or at least 4 years of relevant experience associated with a first university degree is required.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic Languages (Oral and Written) is required.
  • Relevant experience in working with an UN agency or other humanitarian agency or organization, NGO or civil society organization is desirable.
  • Experience in the use of virtual platform – Zoom, WebEx, and Teams, data collection, compilation, analysis and reporting is desirable.   
  • Familiarity and good knowledge of social, political, humanitarian, security and economic conditions in the region is highly desirable.
  • Previous work experience and Knowledge of international human rights, norms, law and practice data is an advantage.
  • Proven skills in facilitating meetings and reporting are desirable.
  • Previous experience in translation with International and local organizations, is an advantage.

Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
