Org. Setting and Reporting

These (2) positions are located in the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit (MPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbents report to the General Foreperson of MPU, under the additional supervision of the Forepersons of the HVAC and Plumbing Shops.

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.


The Apprentice shall perform preventative and corrective maintenance to the HVAC and Plumbing Systems in buildings at United Nations Headquarters. The Mechanical Apprentice shall perform routine tasks of limited technical complexity and shall assist more senior technicians in more complex operations and repairs. The Mechanical Apprentice is expected to work on a rotating shift schedule including evenings and weekends.

Within delegated authority, the Mechanical Apprentice will be responsible for the following

HVAC Maintenance and repair.

– Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the UN complex.
– Perform corrective and preventative maintenance programs as set out by the General
Foreperson of the MPU.
– Make adjustments to ensure adequate air flow, replace filters and belts.
– Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and diagrams related to HVAC equipment.
– Assist in performance or “troubleshooting” of malfunctioning or inoperative equipment,
diagnose problems and complete repairs as necessary.
– Assist in operation and maintenance of the Chiller Plant.
– Other duties as assigned.

Plumbing Systems Maintenance and Repair.

– Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance for plumbing systems in the UN complex.
– Perform corrective and preventative maintenance programs as set out by the General
Foreperson of the MPU.
– Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and diagrams related to plumbing equipment.
– Assist in performance or “troubleshooting” of malfunctioning or inoperative equipment,
diagnose problems and complete repairs as necessary.
– Assist in operation and maintenance of Sprinkler and Standpipe systems.
– Other duties as assigned.


– Follow work procedures and schedules, record time and materials used for work orders.
– Assist with basic data entry and completed assigned work orders.
– Use materials and equipment efficiently.
– Complete assigned training courses including OSHA 10-hour General Industry and UN
mandatory training courses within first 6 months of employment
– Complete certifications and licensing requirements appropriate to trade such as FDNY Fire
Watch (F-60), FDNY Torch Operator (G-60), EPA 608 Universal Certification, and FDNY
Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01).

High school diploma or equivalent technical school diploma is required. Technical Endorsement or Diploma in related technical field from a state-approved vocational education provider (or equivalent) is required.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is desirable.
