About the position

Alliance is seeking to recruit a Research Associate- Monitoring and Evaluation. The Research Associate will support overall coordination and monitoring and evaluation (M&E) functions of the Accelerated Interventions Delivery Initiatives (AID-I) in Malawi. The position reports to the Coordinator for the Southern Africa Bean Research Network (SABRN).

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Regularly review existing and develop new data collection and reporting tools.
  • Build capacity of project partners in M&E data collection and data management.
  • Coordinate the collection and sharing of monitoring data by project staff and implementing partners.
  • Training farmers and extension staff in common bean agronomy and seed business skills.
  • Develop trial plot protocols and support partners in setting up on-farm common bean trials.
  • Organize and facilitate participatory technology evaluations with all actors in the common bean value chain.
  • Support organization and coordination of project planning and review meetings with partners.
  • Collect and analyze data on common bean production, productivity, prices, grain and seed demand.
  • Contribute to writing project proposals, scientific reports, newsletters, policy briefs and website blogs.     
  • Prepare and coordinate data entry and cleaning and provide preliminary data analysis and results write up.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the SABRN coordinator.

 

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Crop Science, Agricultural economics, Agri-business, Agricultural Extension or any social science field.
  • At least two years of relevant work experience including practical application of M&E methods and tools, preferably in research-for-development programs.
  • Experience in training farmers and frontline staff in crop production.
  • Experience in organizing and facilitating participatory technology evaluations with farmers.
  • Experience planning and organizing stakeholder workshops.
  • Proficient in statistical tools and software (e. g. STATA, R or SPSS).
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate to a variety of audience.
  • Good interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary, and multi-cultural team.
  • Strong ability to co-ordinate, prioritize and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure.

Terms of employment

This is a nationally recruited position based in Lilongwe, Malawi. The contract will be for a period of one year, subject to a probation period of three (3) months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
