75 years ago a small group of Americans sent the world’s first CARE package to Europe. They refused to stand on the sidelines while millions of Europeans were suffering. Much has changed since World War II, but our commitment to helping people has not. Today CARE is one of the largest humanitarian organizations fighting global poverty. Women and girls are at the heart of our community-based efforts to improve basic education, increase access to quality health care, expand economic opportunity, respond to emergencies and confront hunger. Last year, with an annual budget of $800 million, CARE worked in over 110 countries and reached more than 174 million people around the world.

Opportunity
As CARE continues to grow, we are expanding our legal team to add a Senior Counsel who will serve as principal legal advisor to HR professionals, senior leadership, and people managers on a broad range of human resources matters. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Counsel will also partner closely with other departments to draft, negotiate and review legal agreements and help oversee and manage domestic and overseas legal needs and exposure while helping CARE achieve its mission.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide Counsel on US and International Employment Laws
   • Provide advice on compliance with US employment laws, and on hiring, compensation, benefits, payroll practices, performance and discipline issues, termination and other employment matters
   • Advise on international employment matters, including employee global mobility, expat and third country national issues, taxation, and other legal issues related to establishing and maintaining operations in new jurisdictions. Occasional international travel may be required.
2. Drive capacity building as it relates to Employment Law
   • Prepare and implement organizational policies and deliver employment law trainings to internal stakeholders.
3. Oversee internal investigations and disputes
   • Oversee internal investigations.
   • Manage employment disputes and litigation and prepare responses to demand letters and EEOC complaints.
4. Provide general legal support on various international and domestic matters
   • Review, draft, negotiate and advise internal clients on broad range of legal documents and agreements, including with employees, vendors, donors and corporate partners.
   • Provide advice and oversight on a wide variety of legal matters, including general corporate and oversees registrations, tax, data privacy, IP and other matters associated with nonprofit management.

Qualifications:

• A J.D. from an accredited US law school and a valid license to practice law in the United States
• 3 to 5 years professional experience as in-house counsel and/or at law firm.
• Detailed understanding of US federal, state and local employment laws.
• Experience providing advice and counseling on employment law matters.
• Ability to inspire trust and work collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
• Superb communication and negotiation skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with multinational teams operating in multiple time zones.
• Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously on a timely basis.
• Quick learner with demonstrated ability and desire to develop expertise in additional legal subject matters.
• Fluency in English.
