Job Description

Queensland has the highest remand rates in Australia and 54 reasons’ program is focused on turning this statistic around. We need you to work closely with young people involved with the youth justice system to take the steps to become the best they can be, through practical support, case management and advocacy.

54 reasons is Australia’s leading child rights organisation – no ordinary not-for-profit.

Proudly part of the Save the Children Australia Group and global movement, we’re here to make sure that everyone understands their rights. So that children and young people have their rights met and thrive, in all their diversity.

We champion the children, young people and families we work with. We are inspired by the curiosity and creativity of children and motivated by the love of those who care for them.

With the child’s voice at the centre, we provide quality services to children and their caregivers, advocating with them so that children develop, learn, and are connected, safe and confident. Our people are proudly local, reflective of the communities we serve – in every state and territory, and across regions, remote areas and capital cities.

Where you come in:

The “Back to Community” program will provide rights-based, trauma-informed culturally responsive through care support for young people transitioning from Cleveland Detention Centre whose home country is Mt Isa, Doomadgee or Mornington Island. You will work with the young person and their family in community to provide support and connections with the community, culture and education.

This is full time, maximum term position based in Townsville (through to June 2024).

You will make an impact by:

  • Leading practice to ensure we target interventions to the needs of young people with an outcomes focus
  • Supporting the coordination of staff caseloads and program logistics, monitoring and evaluation, risk management and child protection
  • Supporting the young people to recover from trauma and access whatever resources and support they need to realise their goals.
  • Building meaningful, respectful connections with families and young people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Making use of local community services and accessing referral pathways
  • Coaching and providing on the job support to develop practice across the team

Does this sound like you?

You’re a highly capable practitioner committed to best practice approaches when working with young people and their families from different walks of life, with complex and challenging needs. You’ve got plenty of energy and a natural leadership style, which helps you mentor and coach other practitioners with a collaborative, positive approach. You understand the issues facing young people and have creative, innovative ideas to provide support. This coupled with your dynamic personality and communication skills enable you to build connections to support young people to lead a bright future.

This role requires:

  • Relevant tertiary level qualification (strongly preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience in using trauma informed practice approaches
  • Understanding of the youth justice system
  • Knowledge of the issues facing young people in the community, including alcohol and other substances, mental health concerns and risks, disengagement from/with education and training opportunities, disruption in family relationships, and displacement and disconnection with their community
  • Exceptional communication skills and experience in report writing
  • Ability to mentor and support colleagues with assessment skills, use of tools and therapeutic interventions
  • Holistic strengths-based approach to achieve lasting change with clients from all walks of life
