The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation committed to advancing security of energy supply, economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy co-operation. The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the OECD. Both the IEA and the OECD seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-member countries of growing importance to the world economy. The Agency aims to foster the contribution of the energy sector to economic development and environmental sustainability across the globe.

The IEA seeks an Communications and Digital Editor who is comfortable writing and editing content about complex energy topics for a broad audience, accomplished at conveying key messages and turning around tight copy. S/he will join the Communications and Digital Office (CDO), which is responsible for the IEA’s public communications, press relations, and online presence. CDO’s goals are to spread the IEA’s mission, messages and policy recommendations, and to help the public and global media gain a better understanding of major energy issues and the IEA’s leadership role on energy security and clean energy transitions. It crafts the Agency’s public communications, develops online tools, and handles the IEA’s social media accounts. The Communications & Digital Editor will work with colleagues across different parts of CDO and the IEA as a whole and cultivate awareness of communications good practices.

Job Description

Main Responsibilities

Editorial production

  • Work with energy analysts, modellers and statisticians across the IEA on making their technical findings and policy advice clearer and more accessible for a non-expert audience.
  • Draft, rewrite, edit and provide feedback on all or part of reports and help energy analysis teams develop key message-related materials such as executive summaries, press releases, articles, presentations and talking points.
  • Act as a liaison between energy analysis teams and the IEA’s frontline communications staff to ensure that analysts’ work, findings and policy advice are being accurately reflected in the Agency’s key messages and public narrative.
  • Provide editorial input from an early stage to high priority IEA publications to ensure that developing key messages and policy advice that is accessible for a wide audience is an integral part of the process.
  • In tandem with energy analysis teams, help craft IEA content and messages on various reports, policies and initiatives, notably the Agency’s work supporting clean energy transitions in emerging and developing economies.

Web and social media

  • Act as a liaison between energy analysts and frontline members of the communications team to identify the best online formats and outlets for new analysis and data, whether on the IEA website, newsletters, social media or other channels.
  • Work with the analysts and web production team to develop new online content for the IEA website that best suits the analysis, including articles, graphics, interactive charts and other materials.
  • Coordinate with energy analysts, policy officers and other teams across the Agency to ensure the text and related materials on the IEA website describing their areas of work (fuel, technology, topic, programme and country pages, for example) are accurate, clear and up-to-date.
  • Liaise between analysts and the social media team to translate energy analysis and data into accessible content for public release across social media channels.
  • Work with energy analysts and the video team to develop narrative content for videos on key findings from IEA analysis.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic Background

  • An advanced academic degree in energy, social sciences, public policies or equivalent practical experience.

Professional Background

  • At least 3-5 years of experience in journalism or other professional writing, drafting and editing, preferably in an international and/or governmental environment.
  • Knowledge of social media tools and online web production is an advantage.
  • Some substantive background in the energy or environment field is required.
  • Ability to take complex technical information and make it understandable to a broad audience.
  • Strong organisational skills and a methodical approach; ability to work independently with precision and to report on progress.
  • Ability to work as part of a larger group is an essential requirement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to take initiative, be innovative and establish positive and productive working relations in a multicultural workplace must be demonstrated.

Core Competencies

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English; working knowledge of French would be an advantage.

Please note that the appointment may be made at one grade lower in the specified job family, based on the qualifications and professional experience of the selected applicant.

Selection Process

For retained candidates, written tests/video-recorded interviews are foreseen mid December/early January and panel interviews are planned for late January.
