Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Sustainable UN (SUN) Unit in Geneva has a mandate to support the UN System’s internal operations as the UN strives towards continual improvement of its environmental sustainability. To further support the environmental improvements the SUN project collects annual reporting from UN entities. To further advance the System’s progress SUN is working to analysis and evaluate existing data collected from UN entities to further identify opportunities for improvement. It also organizes and facilitates knowledge sharing, exchanges of good practice, and awareness raising and communications in support of decision making within the UN system. The Sustainable UN facility project, phase IV, has an increased focus on informing and engaging senior level management and improving system-wide reporting, improving knowledge-management within the community of practice while still maintaining a focus on good communication and the exchange of best practices via the Greening the Blue publication and online community. These activities are in support of the key outcome for the project: to accelerate action and mobilize UN entities to further mainstream environmental considerations into all aspects of management and operations and improve upon the monitoring, reporting, and management of environmental impacts of their internal environmental sustainability. The UNEP New York Office Sustainable UN team does not have the relevant capacity in house, to carry out the requires tasks and needs an external consultant. Expected outputs: 1.
