Mission and objectives

The Office of the UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 by the UN General Assembly. Context

The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program is, within the United Nations, the global organization responsible for promoting volunteerism for peace and development. Volunteering benefits both society as a whole and the individual who volunteers. United Nations Volunteers contribute to peace and development by advocating for volunteering in general, by encouraging partners to integrate volunteering into their development programs, and by mobilizing volunteers. In most cultures, volunteering is deeply rooted and established in societies with a tradition of sharing and helping each other within communities. In this regard, United Nations Volunteers take part in different forms of volunteering and play an important role for development and peace in collaboration with partners, host agencies and local communities. Throughout their assignment, United Nations Volunteers promote volunteering through their actions and conduct. Engaging in voluntary activities can effectively and positively enrich their understanding of social and local realities, as well as creating a bridge between themselves and the people in their host community.
