DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Head of Applied Climate Services (H/ACS).

The incumbent will perform the following duties:

(a) Development of a concept on standardization of agrometeorological bulletins;

(b) Elaboration of a concept on digital agrometeorological advisories;

(c) Technical input into the design and implementation of agrometeorological components of CREWS West Africa and Central Africa projects;

(d). Other relevant duties as necessary to contribute to implementation of activities related to climate services and agriculture.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

WMO and FAO have a longstanding partnership in the field of agricultural meteorology. There are various projects and activities that have been or are currently being implemented jointly between the two organisations. WMO and FAO are also in the process of renewing their joint MoU which calls for greater collaboration including the further development of concept notes, project proposals and provision of technical input into each other’s projects and programmes. Supporting these efforts requires the support of an agrometeorologist with knowledge of the agrometeorological activities of both organisations and who can support a coordinated approach to some activities related to agrometeorological support to countries.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
– Development of a concept on standardization of agrometeorological bulletins.

– Elaboration of a concept on digital agrometeorological advisories.

– Technical input into the design and implementation of agrometeorological components of CREWS West Africa and Central Africa projects.

– Other relevant duties as necessary to contribute to implementation of activities related to climate services and agriculture.

DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
1. Refined concept on standardization of agrometeorological bulletins.

2. Concept on digital agrometeorological advisories.

3. Workplan(s) / concepts for implementation of identified agrometeorological components in CREWS Central Africa and West Africa projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education

Advanced University Degree in applied meteorology, agrometeorology, environmental sciences, or related discipline.

Experience

– Minimum work experience of five (5) years.

– Extensive knowledge on the application of agrometeorology in international projects.

– Previous work experience in the United Nations will be an advantage.

Other requirements

– Knowledge of WMO and FAO working arrangements and joint activities.

– Skill in agrometeorological project proposal development.

– Skill in the technical design and application of agrometeorological concepts.

– Excellent oral and written communication skills.

– Proven analytical and writing skills.

Languages

Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of WMO would be an advantage.
