UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The UN Women Somalia Strategic Note 2022-2025 articulates the entity’s strategic direction, objectives and approaches to support efforts to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, including women’s full enjoyment of their human rights. It outlines how UN-Women will leverage its normative support functions, UN system coordination and operational activities, as mandated by its founding resolution, in an integrated and mutually reinforcing manner in support of transformative results. The SN also contributes to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
Accordingly, UN Women Somalia program focuses, among others on key areas under the triple nexus mandate, encompassing normative, coordination, and operational activities. These areas include women’s peace and protection, joint rule of law, leadership, and economic access and protection.
1.Women, Peace, and Protection program emphasizes ensuring the safety, security, and rights of women in conflict and post-conflict situations. It involves initiatives to prevent gender-based violence, support survivors, promote women’s participation in peace processes, and strengthen legal frameworks for women’s protection.
2. Joint Rule of Law: UN Women works to enhance the rule of law and access to justice for women by promoting gender-sensitive legal systems and institutions. This involves advocating for gender equality within legal frameworks, ensuring access to justice for women, and building the capacity of law enforcement and judicial bodies to address gender-based discrimination and violence.
3. LEAP: Through the Leadership Empowerment, Access and Protection of Women and Girls in Crisis [LEAP] program, UN Women supports efforts to empower women to participate in decision-making processes at all levels, including political, economic, and community leadership. This includes initiatives to increase women’s representation in governance structures, support women’s leadership training and mentoring programs, and challenge societal norms that hinder women’s leadership roles, Economic Access and Protection focuses on promoting economic opportunities for women, particularly in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
In 2025, the global community will mark the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995)3, 25th anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, and the final five years of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. This anniversary should be used as the occasion to engage more with the generation of gender equality advocates and to bring those who remain on the sidelines into the centre of a whole-of-government, whole-of-society effort. The regional commissions of the United Nations have been invited to undertake regional reviews and convene regional intergovernmental meetings. These will feed into the sixty-ninth session of the Commission.
The intensity and the scope of the work undertaken by UN Women Somalia office team, requires a high-functioning and resilient team, clear on the mandate, effective and professional in communicating, focusing on achieving the one liaison office vision, and delivering on the programme, projects targeted results and joint initiatives.
