Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serves 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance. UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyze the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment. The Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN), developed and launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2009 under the Global Adaptation Network (GAN), is the first regional adaptation network. Its secretariat is hosted by the UNEP ROAP. APAN is an open network that strives to equip adaptation actors in the region with knowledge for designing and implementing adaptation measures, building capacity to access technologies and finance, and integrating climate change adaptation into policies, strategies, and plans towards building climate change resilient and sustainable human systems, ecosystems, and economies. APAN has established close partnerships with key sub-regional organizations and has become an important adaptation knowledge mobilizer in Asia and the Pacific region. APAN is seeking a dedicated communications expert to lead all APAN communication activities and provide support to the APAN secretariat in articulating results, outreach and ensure visibility of APAN. The communications expert will have experience working in areas of environment/climate change. This engagement will run for 11 months, from 1 July 2024 to 31 May 2025.
Qualifications/special skills
– Advanced university degree in graphic design/computer sciences/IT/visual arts/media/communications or any other relevant studies. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. – Minimum 3 years of working experience in knowledge management and communications. – Prior experience in the areas of environment/climate change. – Prior experience in implementing communications strategies, developing print and digital content. – Experience in producing briefings, case studies, infographics and other products to facilitate communication of complex environmental issues to a variety of audiences. – Experience in writing stories, briefs and producing web content. – Proficiency with WordPress and other CMS types. – Experience with webinar software platforms.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
