The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.

 

Job Purpose

 

Farmers in the Haor Region in Bangladesh face many challenges. Poverty, food insecurity, and malnutrition are more severe in the Haors than in other parts of the country. IRRI in partnership with NGO and other public organizations will be implementing a Project entitled Climate-Smart Rice Value Chain in the Haor Region. The main objectives of the Project are to increase productivity, profitability, and resilience of the rice farmers; promote sustainable and climate-smart practices in rice production systems; increase mechanization in rice production systems; increase awareness and knowledge on rice-based innovations; and develop agri-entrepreneurship with emphasis on women and youth in the Haor region.

Under the direction and guidance of the Project Leader/Supervisor, the Project Coordinator will be developing and implementing the Climate-Smart Rice Value Chain in the Haor region project activities

This position will be based at the country office in Bangladesh, and may only be filled by permanent citizens of Bangladesh.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and implement the activities on agricultural productivity and growth, and agricultural mechanization
  • Execute climate-smart, high-yielding, and nutritious rice varietal demonstration through Participatory Variety Selection (PVS)
  • Demonstration of crop diversification, access to quality seeds
  • Establish a Rice Crop Clinic for rice insect and disease management
  • Establish cluster demonstration of farm mechanization through Local Service Providers (LSP)
  • Establish a community-based Seed Bank and improve rice seed processing and storage
  • Conduct capacity development training and awareness and entrepreneurship development of young and women farmers
  • Conduct a demonstration of improved agronomic practices
  • Develop information and communication products
  • Coordination with NGO partners, other public research and extension organizations, other stakeholders and donors
  • Prepare the technical and financial reports of the project
  • Engage in monitoring, evaluation, and learning process of the project
  • Facilitate the conduct of the project technical presentations, workshops, seminars, discussions, and meetings of the project
  • Participate in workshops and seminars on ‘Haor Ecosystems’
  • Facilitate the budget management of the project and the project partners
  • All project activities were achieved in time and in an efficient manner
  • All quarterly and annual technical and financial reports are prepared and submitted to the donors with quality standard
  • All project communications materials prepared and demonstrated to the audience
  • Act as a resource person in the capacity development training
  • Carry out the performance appraisals
  • Follow IRRI and Donor’s branding compliances in an efficient manner
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor from time to time

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and 4 years of relevant work experience in project management or
  • Master of Science degree in Agronomy/other related subjects and 1-year relevant work experience in project management

 

Skills Required

 

  • Has proven technical proficiency in conducting on-farm demonstrations
  • Has strong oral and written communication skills including presentation skills
  • Willingness and ability to work in high-pressure and challenging situations
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Has experience working with Climate-Smart Rice Value Chain in the Haor region project activities.
  • Previous work experience in the Haor Ecosystems
  • Previous working experience in international research organizations

Base Salary Ranges: (94, 798 – 177, 443) BDT/ per month

Other Benefits:

  • Housing Allowance: 30% of base pay per month
  • Festival Bonus: 2 months base pay/ year
  • Contributory Provident Fund (CPF): 15% (IRRI’s contribution)
