Responsibilities:
ECA’s mission is to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa; informed by the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063. The mission is guided by ECA’s five strategic directions which are advancing ECA’s position as a premier knowledge institution that builds on its unique position and privilege to bring global solutions to the continent’s problems and take local solutions to the continent; developing macroeconomic and structural policy options to accelerate economic diversification and job creation; designing and implementing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and for human, physical and social assets for a transforming Africa; contributing solutions to regional and transboundary challenges, with a focus on peace security and social inclusion as an important development nexus; advocating Africa’s position at the global level and developing regional responses as a contribution to global governance issues. The position is located in the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (IDEP) in Dakar (Senegal). IDEP is headed by a Director and is accountable to the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme). IDEP is a subsidiary and training arm of ECA and is responsible for improving public sector management and development planning in support of member States’ structural transformation. The core functions of IDEP are as follows: contributing to enhancing the capacity of member States for better participatory development planning, including long-term visioning, sectoral policy design and planning and urban and regional planning; contributing to strengthening the capacity of member States to develop and adopt better approaches to economic policy formulation, management, monitoring and evaluation; contributing to enhancing the capacity of African countries to autonomously deploy development planning tools to achieve structural transformation of their economies and societies; and investing in capacity development, advisory and policy dialogue programmes and activities targeted at the mid-career and senior officials of African Governments, with special attention given to the next generation of younger professionals and women officials. Responsibilities: A workplan with outcomes and achievements for the duration of the Internship will be agreed upon. Regular meetings with interns will be required to discuss processes and work-related outcomes. Under the overall supervision of the Head of the Training and Research Division (TRD), and working directly with thematic focal points in TRD, the incumbent will carry out the following functions: ? Assist with research in support of the preparation of studies, reports, papers, fact sheets and infographics related to the work of the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning. ? Identify and compile information, statistics, and databases in the areas of policy priority for the IDEP work including on capacity needs assessments, economic management, social policy, development planning, statistics, youth, gender, and climate change. ? Assist with organizing and convening meetings, training, including attending to all relevant preparations and note-taking. ? Participate in team and division meetings to share information and assist colleagues in providing updates on implementation of deliverables and for planning exercises. ? Assist team members in reporting processes in line with IDEP and wider ECA reporting procedures. ? Perform other duties as might be assigned by the TRD responsible officer.
Requirements:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Internships do not require work experience
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English or French is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
