Responsibilities:
Within delegated authority, the Interpreter will be responsible for the following duties: – Services up to seven meetings per week (exceptionally eight), usually of no more than three hours duration, of various United Nations bodies. Arabic interpreters provide interpretation into Arabic of speeches given in English or French and interpretation into English or French – as appropriate – of speeches given in Arabic. Routinely covers sensitive meetings. – Routinely functions as team leader of all interpreters assigned to a given meeting. – Instructs and advises interpreter trainees upon request of chief of section. – Assists in the preparation of examination and training material upon request of chief of section. – Performs other duties as required.
Requirements:
Education
A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.
Job – Specific Qualification
Candidates for this position are required to have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for Arabic Interpreters.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of professional interpreting experience in international organizations is required.
Languages
A native command of Arabic, normally expected to be the candidate’s main language. Candidates for these posts must also possess an excellent command of English or French as an active interpretation language, as required.
