Duties and Responsibilities
The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy-oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region. The Intern will contribute to ESCAP’s ongoing efforts to promote disability inclusion at ESCAP under the purview of Division of Administration and Social Development Division, aligned with ESCAP’s Disability Inclusion Policy, Disability Inclusion Implementation Action Plan and its Disability-inclusive Employment Promotion Plan. All of the documents, guided by the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS), set out the key principles for programmes and projects to follow, with the vision for ESCAP to be a fully disability-inclusive organization. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background and the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to: • Carries out research and data analysis related to disability inclusion initiatives undertaken by other entities; • Research and present benchmarks on best practices of inclusive work environments; • Contributes to the preparation of various written outputs and data visualization, e.g. draft background papers, sections of reports and studies, and inputs to publications; • Assist in organizing and convening meetings/seminars/workshops and attending to other relevant preparations; • Contribute to awareness-raising programme in the area of disability inclusion; • Support and advise on activities on reasonable accommodations; *The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Division of Administration and Social Development Division.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: 1) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, 2) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Be computer literate in standard applications, Experience in data analysis and data visualization is strongly preferred. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of different opinions and views. Studies in social science, economics or other relevant areas required. No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship. Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
Additional Information
In the context of ongoing construction at the ESCAP premise, internships may be undertaken remotely or in Bangkok. The location of the internship is to be decided on with the hiring manager.
