Researcher/Data Analyst (Part time)

IIASA is searching for a Researcher/Data Analyst for 20 hours per week, to assist the Office of the Deputy Director General in the collection, analysis, and visualization of data related to global trends in scientific research and innovation.

The role

The key responsibilities include identifying appropriate data sources, analyzing data using statistical methods, and producing high-quality visualizations for reports and presentations.

main duties and responsibilities

The successful candidate will closely collaborate with the Deputy Director General and the Library Knowledge and Resources Unit to:

  • Perform literature analysis and summarize findings on the impact of scientific, technical, economic, or societal developments.
  • Extract and analyze technical data to develop reports on topics such as science distribution by field and geographic region.
  • Analyze global and national trends in scientific research across various disciplines, geographic regions, and key factors such as funding, publishing, and policies.
  • Identify, clean, and verify data from appropriate sources using relevant tools and methods.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code that adheres to best practices and coding standards.
  • Create effective presentations of scientific data through analysis and synthesis.
  • Use commercial statistical and data management software for database management, data compilation, and processing.

qualifications, experience, and requirements

  • A degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Experience with data management systems and databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB. Experience with retrieving and exporting bibliographic data from databases like Scopus or Web of Science. Familiarity with bibliometric analysis.
  • Experience with programming languages such as R and Python. Excel for in-depth data analysis and evaluation of research programs is essential. Familiarity with Kubernetes and AWS is a plus.
  • Ability to identify, collect, incorporate, analyze trends and outcomes, and report on data from external sources (such as websites, online resources, and published materials) relevant to the research program goals.
  • Ability to collect, merge, and analyze data on scientific and discipline-specific topics (e.g., reviewer expertise, publications, and citations related to STEM education projects) using reproducible scripts, established program languages and query systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with representatives from the STEM education and research community to develop and support research programs, policies, and plans.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with scientific and administrative colleagues.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and analytical mindset.
  • Interest in learning new tools, languages and workflows.
  • Flexible and adaptable in responding to deadlines.

appointment terms

Candidates should be available to take up the position as soon as possible in 2024.

We offer an initial fixed-term, 50%, part time (20 hours per week) employment contract for one year, with the possibility for extension thereafter.

Duties will be carried out at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, near Vienna in Austria.

We offer

  • An attractive salary which is exempt from income tax in Austria, based on qualifications, skills and experience of the selected individual but at least EUR 19,912.00 gross per annum for 20 hours per week (subject to deductions for health insurance and/or social security).
