Global Corporate Solutions
Reporting to the Managing Director and World Bank Chief Administrative Officer, Global Corporate Solutions (GCS) brings together the functions of Corporate Security, Corporate Real Estate, and Corporate Services.
About the Unit
The Corporate Services (GCSCS) unit within GCS provides services to the WBG in the areas of Travel and Visa services; Translation and Interpretation; Printing & Multimedia Services; Interactive Media Services; Graphic Design; Editorial Production & Publications; Food and Conference Services; Mail & Shipping; Staff Services, including Fitness Center, Childcare, and Commuter Services; and the Art Program. The unit also provides administrative oversight to the WBG Family Network and the 1818 Society and is responsible for setting the policy framework and service standards, and for delivering services through a combination of staff and vendors at WBG headquarters (HQ) in Washington, DC and in Country Offices. GCSCS has about 130 staff and over 600 contractors.
To achieve its purpose, GCSCS is structured into two main divisions: (I) Travel and Client Services (GCSTC), and (II) Business Services (GCSBA). GCSCS also has the GCS Service Desk and Processing and Analytics Unit support team in Chennai.
The GCS Art Program is part of GCSTC and is responsible for managing the World Bank’s permanent collection of over 6,000 artworks. The Art Program curates exhibitions (physical and virtual) highlighting various aspects of development and the Bank’s mission. Art exhibitions feature mostly contemporary, emerging visual artists from developing countries. Performing arts and creative industries, such as music, dance, theater, poetry, cinema, fashion, and design are occasionally included, and this may expand, together with AI and data visualization. The Art Program rotates artworks in public spaces around the Bank’s headquarters buildings and works closely with the Corporate Real Estate team on headquarters and Country Office building and office renovation projects, advising select Bank Country Offices on art acquisitions. The Art Program runs art educational and outreach programs, including art workshops, tours, and lectures for Bank staff and others. The Art Program runs an annual, global Children’s Art Prize Contest in collaboration with the World Bank Family Network, sponsored by the World Bank President. The Art Program coordinates closely with IFC colleagues for a collaborative approach across the World Bank Group.
The Deputy Curator reports to the Art Curator and works under her direction. The Deputy Curator also works closely with other Art Program staff and staff across GCS and the wider World Bank Group. The Deputy Curator acts as backup for the Curator. Other duties and accountabilities are outlined below.
Duties and Accountabilities
Art Research and Program Support
• Conducts art historical research on exhibition topics and artworks in the Bank’s collection.
• Produces short and long-form labels for artworks on display. Produces texts for exhibitions and publications.
• Scouts for art from emerging and other artists from Bank member countries for potential acquisition. Ensures legal title for works are obtained if acquisitions are pursued.
• Performs upkeep of the Art Program’s collection database, TMS/Gallery Systems/emuseum.
• Networks with World Bank operational units, Senior Management, and other internal and external stakeholders to progress Art Program initiatives.
• Coordinates with Real Estate team on art-related aspects of headquarters and Country Office building, renovation, and office modernization projects.
• Supports delivery of the World Bank Children’s Art Prize Contest.
• Supports the Curator in developing and updating Art Program procedures and policies.
• Supports the Curator in deaccessioning artworks from the Bank’s collection.
Organization of Exhibitions
• Organizes exhibitions, which may be physical or virtual, and may involve visual, performing, creative industries or other art forms.
• Handles exhibition logistical arrangements and administrative aspects.
• Prepares exhibition texts and publications, researching and obtaining documentation for rights and reproductions of images.
• Liaises with visual, performing, or other artists that may be involved in the exhibition. Partners with World Bank Group units that may be involved in the exhibition.
• May involve internal fundraising in support of the exhibition.
• May involve organization of art events’ receptions, exhibition openings, coordinating volunteers, some of which may occur in the evenings or on weekends.
Communications, Outreach, and Networking
• In collaboration with other Art Program team members, creates written and visual (photo, video, AI, etc.) content for the Art Program’s website, the World Bank’s contributions to Google Art and Culture, the Art Program’s YouTube channel, and the Art Program’s monthly, internal newsletter.
• Works with the GCSCS and GCS Communications Officers on Art Program outreach and communications.
• Works with the Curator and at her direction to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepares texts, briefs, reports, posters, flyers, invites, media advisories, and other communications materials, collaborating closely with the Curator and GCS communications colleagues.
• May act as a point of contact with the public for the Art Program.
Educational Programs
• Independently conducts guided tours of the collection and exhibitions for World Bank Group employees, external visitors, and VIPs.
• Works with Art Program team members to develop Art Program educational programs, including workshops, lectures, visits to external museums and collections, etc. May involve delivery of content by special guests and/or the Deputy Curator.
Selection Criteria
• Master’s degree in a relevant discipline, such as art history, museum studies, art education, cultural anthropology, arts management, or related fields and strong research skills in art history, with a minimum of 8 years of experience
• Demonstrated skills in leading and managing large, complex projects and groups, preferably within international financial institutions or multilateral organizations.
• Experience in budget accountability and cost tracking.
• Possess cross cultural management experience.
• Ability to balance corporate/institutional perspectives with operational issues and risk concerns.
• Demonstrated ability to lead discussions with all levels of internal and external stakeholders at senior.
• Track record of intellectual leadership and ability to integrate own with other fields of expertise.
• Ability to navigate complex policy issues with corporate significance, manage multiple complex tasks, and an ability to forge strong and effective relationships and resolve differences across organizational boundaries.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills in English, with demonstrated ability to think strategically and synthesize complex issues. Additional language skills a plus.
• Superior organizational and logistical skills, and the ability to follow-up systematically on a broad set of initiatives and decisions.
• Very strong interpersonal skills to work effectively in teams, with management and colleagues at all levels, with a proven ability to work across functions/boundaries, and to build bridges across different constituencies.
• A high degree of self-motivation, positive attitude, and drive and the ability to contribute to a team-based, multi-cultural work environment.
• Knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, SharePoint, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook.
• Experience with TMS Gallery Systems/emuseum software a plus.
