The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) forms part of the United Nations Secretariat and, like the other regional commissions, operates under the supervision of the United Nations Economic and Social Council. ESCWA comprises 21 Arab countries in Western Asia and North Africa. ESCWA provides a framework for the formulation and harmonization of sectoral policies for member countries, a platform for congress and coordination, a home for expertise and knowledge, and an information observatory. ESCWA activities are coordinated with the divisions and main offices of the Headquarters of the United Nations, specialized agencies, and international and regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and its subsidiary bodies, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. This position is located in Cluster 2 on Gender Justice, Population, and Inclusive Development in the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA – unescwa.org). Under the overall supervision of the Cluster Leader, the incumbent will report to the Senior Economic Affairs Officer – Poverty and Human Development.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Compiles, processes and manipulates data sets derived from a variety of sources in appropriate statistical software. 2. Assembles and examines original statistical material to ensure accuracy, clarity and validity; makes appropriate adjustments. 3. Supports the development of methodological frameworks to analyze money-metric and multidimensional poverty and inequality by computing deprivation levels based on predefined methodological frameworks for poverty and inequality analysis, including all relevant tasks such as robustness tests and sensitivity analyses. 4. Assists in identifying and monitoring substantive aspect of the work of the Section in various countries. Selects and evaluates a variety of documents, summarizes pertinent material, collects and analyses data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports. 5. Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information from a wide variety of information sources; prepares input for electronic databases and online platforms and co-operates with research institutes and organizations in the collection of data. 6. Assembles and examines original statistical material to ensure accuracy, clarity and validity; makes appropriate adjustments. 7. Designs, prepares and maintains a country profile for each country assigned to the Section. 8. Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, charts, data sets, and/or diagrams for information in order to facilitate in-depth analysis of the retrieved information by the supervisor and other users. 9. Participates in the substantive and policy discussions of the Section. 10. Maintains and expands contacts with other departments in the Secretariat, as well as the UN agencies and programmes and other organizations relevant to the region, and co-ordinates the input of other departments in the collection of data for assignments received. 11. Prepares, maintains and updates files and internal databases; designs and generates a variety of periodic and ad hoc reports, statistical tables, charts, graphs, and other background materials/notes to facilitate inspection and other reviews. 12. Drafts programme/project summaries, co-ordinates review and clearance process, and coordinates with editor, translation services, etc., on finalizing and publishing outputs in multiple languages. 13. Identifies the organizational requirements for conferences and meetings and assists in the preparation of documentation and reports for these meetings. 14. Attends meetings to follow discussions, takes notes and prepares summary reports, notes for the file, correspondence, etc. 15. Provides guidance and training to new/junior staff. 16. Performs other related work as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
An advanced university degree in Economics, Statistical or Mathematical sciences is desirable.
Work Experience
Seven (7) years of experience in collecting and researching data across various areas of social and economic development or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) years for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. At least two (2) years of experience in analyzing microdata from household surveys or poverty analysis is desirable. At least two (2) years of experience in working with STATA, EViews or other statistical software is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. In addition, Arabic is a working language at ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required; and fluency in Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
