This position is located within the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, Baghdad (UNAMI). The Special Assistant reports to the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator (DSRSG/RC/HC) in Iraq.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities Within the limits of delegated authority, the Special Assistant is responsible for the following duties: • Deliver substantive support to the DSRSG/RC/HC in line with the Mission mandate; keep the DSRSG/RC/HC informed of all matters requiring his/her attention; keep DSRSG abreast of issues that may impact humanitarian and development programming. Proactively formulate options, and ensure follow-up as needed. • Identify and analyze top-line political, humanitarian, and economic issues. Monitor emerging issues in line with the Mission mandate and Resident Coordinator priorities. • Evaluate implications and formulate concrete recommendations on potential UN policies and strategies. • Facilitate integrated activities on behalf of the DSRSG/RC/HC and coordinate communication between UNAMI and the UN Country Team (UNCT) to ensure linkages and synergies. • Support the DSRSG/RC/HC in his engagement with the Iraqi government officials, donors, and diplomatic missions on development on development and humanitarian matters to improve synergy and coordination between all interlocutors. • Lead and coordinate inputs from various units into the formulation of the DSRSG/RC/HC speeches and talking points. • Author analytical reports and summaries including, but not limited to, code cables, Security Council reports, and issues-based reports for the DSRSG/RC/HC signature. Edit UNCT and UNAMI reports under tight deadlines. • Organize DSRSG/RC/HC field trips, internal meetings, external missions and other activities as needed. • Provide immediate summaries as required and follow up with partners, as needed. • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, social science, economics, law, public administration, or a related field. A first university degree with a combination of two years professional and academic qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the Master’s degree or equivalent.

Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related field is required. Experience working on development and humanitarian issues is required. Experience working in a United Nations common system field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) – or similar international organization or non-governmental organization – in a conflict or post-conflict setting is desirable. Previous experience working in the office of a senior public official as a Special Assistant (or similar) to a senior public official is desirable. Previous experience working in the Middle East is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic is required.
