As an Associate Economics Officer, you will: support the economic research and data science work of the division and department; support the preparation of flagship publication Asian Development Outlook (ADO) through quantitative research/analysis and economic database management; contribute to research work that involves large datasets and high frequency data for analytics (econometrics and machine learning), assist with technical assistance (TA) processing and administration.

- Provide support to economic research for the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) reports, technical assistance (TA)-funded research projects, and ad hoc economic studies.
- Analyze economic data using a variety of approaches, from traditional econometrics to data science, and provide technical research assistance in the work of the division related to the field of advanced analytics—particularly on deep learning; big data and cloud computing; machine learning; and data mining and wrangling.
- Pursue directed and self-directed research work, including data collection, database management, statistical analysis, and data presentation; review and synthesize related economic literature; and provide clear, logical presentations of ideas and empirical results.
- Prepare supporting materials for various briefing notes for Management and data requests from other departments.
- Contribute to the development and dissemination of ADO, including supporting the preparation of ADO country chapters, the global and regional outlook, and analytical chapters.
- Coordinate preparation of data, tables/charts, and check country chapters for consistency.
- Maintain computer-based information systems and programs for analysis and modeling by determining information requirements, coordinating with data sources and users, and generating output reports. This includes data collection, database management, advanced analytics—including the use of data science, machine learning, and AI when possible.
- Provide technical and administrative support in planning, processing, and implementing research and development and advisory TA projects from conceptualization to completion, by drafting concept papers and TA reports; preparing cost estimates; selecting/evaluating consultants; regularly monitoring TA budgets; arranging conferences and workshops under the TA; communicating and liaising with consultants, cooperating agencies, and other ADB departments/offices; assisting the processing of TA study outputs for publication; and preparing TA completion reports as may be assigned by International Staff.
- Assist in the preparation of the divisional budget, as needed; conduct ad hoc research, and assist in developing and organizing staff learning programs.
Qualifications
You will need:
- Master’s degree in Economics, Statistics or Data Science; Bachelor’s degree with relevant training (e.g., professional certification) can also be considered
- At least 6 years of relevant professional experience in quantitative analysis and data management, preferably with advanced training and experience in economic research and data science.
- Good knowledge and understanding of economics and economic data, economic policy issues, and development trends in the region.
- Good knowledge and understanding of applied statistical/econometric techniques, machine learning, and other related analytical tools.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of the research process.
- A high level of analytical and conceptual skills.
- Excellent skills in oral and written English, preferably with demonstrated economic research writing ability.
- Proficiency in using spreadsheets, statistical/econometric software, database applications, and knowledge in implementing automated routines.
- Ability to code using Python, R, and/or other programming languages. Knowledge of business intelligence, data visualization, and analytical tools and accessing data sources using APIs an advantage.
- Relevant professional experience in development research and policy using data science techniques.
