For every child, a voice
Bangladesh continues to host 1,003,394 Rohingya refugees1 from Myanmar in 33 camps in Cox’s Bazar District and Bhasan Char of Noakhali District, 51 per cent of them children. As part of the Rohingya refugee relocation plan by the Government of Bangladesh to Bhasan Char, 35,629 refugees have been relocated to the island as of 31 December 2023. The Rohingya refugee camps are overcrowded and have other physical challenges that limit refugees’ access to education, protection, food, water, shelter, and health services. This raises risks of mortality, morbidity and protection violations and affects people’s well-being, with women and children continuing to face multiple deprivations and increasing needs. While humanitarian support has decreased in the past year, refugees remain reliant on significant humanitarian assistance, particularly to access essential services.
The protracted Rohingya refugee crisis is a major humanitarian emergency with world’s largest refugee settlement. In 2023, UNICEF reached 361,374 Rohingya refugees through multi-sectoral services. UNICEF has established partnerships with local, national, and international NGOs, as well as relevant government departments, to facilitate the delivery of interventions and services. However, the highly intensive humanitarian interventions in Rohingya Refugee Camps and Host communities in Cox’s Bazar have presented challenges for UNICEF staff in conducting representative samples during regular field visits to monitor their programme.
In response to these challenges, the UNICEF Cox’s Bazar office has onboarded a TPM services provider to support this, UNICEF seeks to hire a Monitoring and Data Analyst to enhance coordination between the Programme Sections and Third-Party Monitors (TPMs) and quality assurance of programme monitoring.
