I. MSF INTERNATIONAL
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.
MSF International is the legal entity that binds MSF’s 24 sections, 25 associations and other offices together. Registered in Switzerland, MSF International provides coordination, information and support to the MSF Movement, as well as implements international projects and initiatives as requested.
II. CONTEXT
MSF recognizes the urgent need to address climate change and its impact on vulnerable populations. As a medical humanitarian organization, MSF is committed to reducing its own carbon footprint and actively working towards environmental sustainability.
As the result of the 2019 Green Motion, voted for in the International General Assembly (IGA) and the Environmental Pact of 2020, signed by the IGA, International Board, and Full Executive Committee, MSF has set a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.
In 2022 MSF signed, like many other organisations the “Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations”.
These commitments extend to all levels of the organization, including operational centres, supply centres, and partner sections. MSF aims to integrate climate and environmental considerations into its operations, implementing strategies to mitigate its impact and promote sustainability. This includes efforts to accurately measure and monitor carbon emissions, implement carbon reduction initiatives, and ensure accountability through effective carbon accounting practices. The Climate & Environment Mitigation team plays an important role in driving these activities and promoting a culture of environmental responsibility within MSF.
Note:
When the term “MSF Climate and Environment Mutual Accountability Framework (C&E MAF)” is mentioned it should not be confused with the existing “MSF Mutual Accountability Report”. The latter aims to provide a global overview of the Medical Operational choices and reflect on specific themes to support collective MSF operational accountability.
The C&E MAF has the objective of Climate and Environment related issues around steering, accountability, learning and visibility. It is a newly developed framework not yet implemented.
III. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The purpose of the job of the IO Climate and Environment Mitigation Team leader and Climate and Environment Mutual Accountability Framework Implementor is to assist MSF in achieving its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. Additional objectives include updating and implementing the C&E MAF, monitoring mitigation efforts, reporting on progress, and integrating climate and environmental considerations into strategic processes. When requested, the individual will report to international governing bodies and facilitate collaboration among MSF members.
The other IO Climate and Environment Mitigation team members report to the team leader.
Upon assembling the complete team, they proceed to establish a more intricate distribution of tasks pertaining to the implementation of the C&E MAF.
